And a little side topic. How close have you gotten to chuuren poutou?
I once hit chuuren poutou twice in one night
This is just like when I was on my alt and there was two 3dan and one 2dan in ippan.

I hope all of those niggas are trying to get an easy +15 to rank up.
That sure backfired hilariously.
>>14822892
On second glance, all three of them have low R for their rank, so they are probably far from ranking up.
At least you can get good R if you win.
>>14822857
>>14822908
I'm probably going to get second or third unless the flow saves me.
>>14822910
It's only East 2. Stick it to them.
>>14822857
I guess I wasn't the biggest buster on the table, but it would have been nice to have won a hand. Wasn't my best performance nevertheless.
I wish I didn't forget I had auto-win on.
>>14823633
that's on you.
i don't see the point of having it on unless you were in tenpai and you wanted to go take a shit or something.

I told you guys to poop before playing didn't I?
>>14823656
Gotta let that fighting spirit in!
>>14823633
Hey, mine was almost exactly the same as yours.
Sometimes you've got to accept that sweet consolation mangan.
>>14823691
The difference is I can tsumo mine in 6 turns and I can stay in tenpai even if I accept the last dragon. Silver lining is that the consolation mangan kept me at the top and made me win.

He dealt into dealer's damaten mangan, then he dealt into dealer's tanyao 1dora, and then he dealt into kamicha's damaten tanyao 2redfives when he had declared riichi for a itsu 1redfive with a penchan wait on 3p.
If you want, here's the replay. I'm not happy with how I played, either, but I got off easy since I avoided last place. The following game I had the flow and then won that one, so there's that.

They were better off back from whence they came. At least, one got deservedly punished.

Now that I look at the replay, he was in tenpai or had declared riichi all three times he dealt in. Sometimes you just can't finish the hand.

I really just know the basics. Cannot really memorise the yakus and shit yet.
>>14825132
I hope you discarded 4 pin in the first round because you didn't know what was going on and not because you suddenly decided to go for seven pairs.
>>14825203
I don't remember what I was thinking 10 minutes ago, let alone when I was playing that game.
But probably 7 pairs is the right answer.
Haha.
>2:0
>>14825216
That's too bad. Your hand was going to be worth 3 han at worst and you switched to the same 3 han and went from 1-away to like infinite-away. Even worse, the game threw 2 winning tiles at you after that. Your final hand would be worth 6 han.

You had a pair and 456 in man, 334 and 678 in pin, 45 sou. When you discarded 4 pin you were 1 tile away from tenpai. Then the game gave you 2 pin and 6 sou. You'd have riichi, tanyao, pinfu, dora, ippatsu, menzen tsumo.

Could anyone tell me what the kanji says below the seven sou? When I select a three sou it says 4, but when I select six or nine it says 2. My hand has more than two han, so I don't know what it might mean.
>>14826035
I think it's how many there's left in the wall, in case you can't count. I think
>>14826035
It says 4 han. If you throw out the 3-sou your hand will include ittsu, which gives you an extra 2 han. If you throw out 6 or 9-sou your hand is only worth 2 han (aka-dora and riichi).

>>14827304
If you do that with real tile in front of my face, I'll react with a "hey, WTF are you doing?"
>>14827304
Kuikae, you can't call a tile and then discard one that would've also completed the called sequence. It applies to both sequences (call 2 to complete 3-4, you cannot discard another 2 or 5) and triplets (you can't call 2 from a 222 shape and then discard the fourth 2).

Can't I use the pause that happens when someone can call a tile to guess what other people have?
>>14830207
Sometimes, but sometimes Tenhou randomly adds pauses to some discards, which makes it harder to tell. In any case, I always enable the no-call button when I know I don't want to call.
>>14830207
Yes, but Tenhou also pauses at random times to fool you, so it's unreliable. Also, you don't know if they have already have completed sequence or not. It's only useful when you're to the right of the person who threw out a tile that's floating, because you know it isn't you're not thinking about chi'ing it, which means at least 3 of that tile are not in the wall.
Where do I get custom stuff for windows client? Surely somebody already made call sounds from Saki and things like that.

Common 3-dan mistake. Keeping worthless tiles in the hand, that may eventually get him killed later on.
>>14832442
I'm new, which are you talking about. Do you mean the chun?
>>14832480
No, I'm talking about the 3-dan across, who got fucked by that 5-pin.
>>14832442
I don't know if I'd call it worthless, we don't know what the shape the hand was in before that draw. If he had 5666p and 5s, for example, keeping 5p is correct because it goes tenpai with 3/4/5/6/7p or 1/3/4/5/6/7s.
Honestly it's not like he had a safer option in his discards, either, since West could've been going for yakuhai or tanyao equally, and it's orasu. You might as well go for maximum efficiency if you aren't going to bite the pillow and accept the 3rd place.
Are there any games that are good for beginners that support online play? I'm not exactly well versed on mahjong myself, and I have a few friends who are complete beginners that want to start playing.
>>14832804
SEGA MJ is pretty casual as long as you know the tiles, it shows shanten number, your waits when you're in tenpai, and has pretty graphics. I've yet to find a riichi mahjong client that supports multiplayer in which you can turn off the timer, but in MJ private lobbies, you can make the timer a bit longer.
>>14832486
>>14832507
His mistake was not settling for third.
He had virtually no chance of getting first and a very remote chance of 2nd on a shit wait. Meanwhile, he's in mangan range of last and at least one player has a guaranteed mangan hand.
>>14832880
We'll try that one out, I'm sure all of them at least know what tiles are what. Thanks.
Does anyone here have experience in actual jansou? I'll visit Japan in about 3 weeks, but since I'll go alone, I doubt I can go to that place, let alone playing there.
>>14832904
He could've gotten 2nd with a direct hit off East or a haneman tsumo. All he'd need is one ura dora for that, since his hand is already mangan. Even if he bailed, he has what, one safe tile in 5m? 4m/6m look somewhat safe from the pond/dora/call, at least for east/west, but I don't know if I'd want to deal those tiles against south.
I think it makes perfect sense to play the odds with that in mind.
>>14832973
The wait is terrible, and risking a 4th to get 2nd at best is in general a bad tradeoff. There needs to be at least a realistic chance at 1st. The 1k riichi deposit also puts a 5200 tsumo from last in range to put him in last.
The 1pin is relatively safe since 1st is most likely to be rushing a tanyao, and despite being dora the birds are also quite safe since tanki is the only possible wait and the one player with confirmed yakuhai has discarded it.
>>14833052
Scrap the 5200 tsumo part, not going to happen. The relevant point change is actually that 4th no longer needs a dora for a direct ron to pass you.
>>14830569
There's also these.

So what exactly was the point of C going into riichi here if he is just going to ignore someone dealing in?
I mean it worked out great for me in the end but did I just miss a furiten or was that just a case of the delicious free sex button?

>>14833590
With tsumo and 3 ura-dora, or with a direct hit on B with some ura-dora, he could get out of last. He likely didn't intend to win a pointless hand like that one.
>>14833590
He was definitely aiming for the grand rinshan kaihou lesbian finish.
>>14833590
>I mean it worked out great for me in the end but did I just miss a furiten or was that just a case of the delicious free sex button?
erm, you had a 234 and a 56. he dropped an 8 there. you needed a 7. the 'X' looking thing...that one guy had 3 of, and the other wouldn't have dropped. also, the 4's we all taken, too, and 3 of the 1's......
>>14833646
He dealt into C, hence the question. I know I had a 147 man wait.
It took me 10 more games to reach 6kyu from 7kyu than reach 2dan from 1dan. I don't know what to feel about it.
>>14833590
>So what exactly was the point of C going into riichi here if he is just going to ignore someone dealing in?
He'd still remain in 4th. So, it's obviously pointless to call a win here.

>>14834298
In that same match, one Noname called his hand down to one tile without a yaku, but with potential tan yao if he just discarded his useless sha, and the other Noname called his hand down to one tile with a hell-wait for daisangen on that same sha, but Noname 1 didn't fall for his shit, and refused to throw out the sha in favor of much more dangerous looking tiles. Figured I might've had a chance to draw the winning tile better with that wait, and furiten tsumo are delicious, so I took the risk.
I didn't expect to get a chance to get out of furiten at all though.
>>14839509
>Figured I might've had a chance to draw the winning tile better with that wait, and furiten tsumo are delicious, so I took the risk.
From your point of view, 14m had five remaining tiles to draw. 58p had three remaining tiles. Not to mention that 5p was next to both the riichi tile and the dora. If you were going to switch, you should've at least taken the 58s furiten, which had six tiles left and the 8s was one chance.
>>14839530
Even though the 14m furiten wait had more tiles, I felt like trying to keep that wait after being in furiten for two of my winning tiles was bad for my flow, so I switched to a shittier wait because I believe in mahjong demons.
>>14839539
14 furiten didn't have more waits because a 1 wouldn't make a yaku.

>>14839553
And the second half of the finals is in 10 and a half hours.
>>14839544
That's right, sorry, I wasn't paying attention to the hand's yaku just now.
Both waits were pretty much equally poor. Furiten for 4m which only had three tiles left, and furiten for 58p which had a single 5p left and two 8p left.
There was something magical about these hands happening back to back.
Thank you for the games.
>>14839596
The 4 was still the better wait, but only because if you drew a 2 or 3 man then you can get out of furiten.
>>14839616
Yeah, I had a sinking feeling that I wasn't going to get 1st tonight in 7447 after your daiminkan on the very first discard gave you four dora.
Well played.
>>14839624
Didn't even think of that. I should brush up on my tile efficiency before I play again, I can't always count on dumb luck like that last minute 7p tanki to win me the hand. Still, it is pretty fun to win with retarded decisions like that.
>>14839632
I felt the same way after that baiman. I thought the daiminkan would be my only hope to catch up and would put some pressure on you, but it ended up paying off way more than I expected. If the point difference were smaller, I wouldn't have done it since it's such a big gamble, but I guess huge swings of unpredictability are why we all love and hate this game.

>>14852256

Just kidding.I even declared a furiten riichi when I played in the mahjong parlor in Torrance on Saturday. I'm terrible.
>>14852576I'm curious, were there any other /jp/ people at that mahjong parlor?
>>14852614
There was at least 12 people there excluding the owner (who was really nice since he kept going around giving us treats and would be your sub if you had to use the restroom or something). There were two automatic tables.
The guy who drove my ass plays primarily on MJnet. I don't think he frequents 4chan. He might? He was blaring anime music on the way home and knows about Saki and stuff.
Two dudes, who were basically in charge of the meetup, were from the Pacific Mahjong League. Doubt they frequent 4chan, either, but I believe they hang out in the IRC.
3 people were native Japanese - one chick and two dudes. Doubt it.
There were three other ladies; two young white chicks and one older Japanese lady. I highly doubt they browse 4chan, either.
I played with the guy who drove me, the older Japanese lady, and an older white guy. I highly doubt he browses 4chan.
Two other Asian guys came in, but I didn't really paid too much attention since I was too busy trying not to fuck up playing with actual tiles. I can't say if they browse 4chan or not.
So tl;dr I was basically the only representative from 4chan. I missed a ron, I declared a furiten riichi, and I forgot to drew tiles before discarding for at least 4 hands, among other mistakes. I didn't do a good job representing 4chan, in my opinion.
At least I didn't place last in either of the two hanchans I played?
>>14852687
When I'm talking about the older Japanese lady and the older white guy, I mean OLD. The lady had extensive wrinkles and the white guy reminded me of Mitt Romney. Mitt dominated in both of my games. Apparently he won nearly all the games he played that day.
I didn't win a single hand but I only dealt in twice.
There is a rental fee of $5 per hour, by the way.
>>14852687
>>14852714
Huh, interesting. If they ever arrange a meeting that's not Saturday afternoon, I'll try to show up and embarrass myself as well.
>>14852687
Honestly, as long as you had fun, it doesn't really matter. If I had the chance to play with tiles in person, I'd constantly be doing shit like declaring furiten/noten riichis on purpose, making open riichis if they were allowed, and getting to hadaka tanki with no yaku to try and win off of improbable situations like haitei, houtei or chankan.
>>14852720
It'd be cool if you could come! Unfortunately, the next one is apparently scheduled for March 12, which is a Saturday.
>>14852725
That's true. I had fun nonetheless.
I'll have to try that kind of stuff around people my age next time. The two older folk seemed to have been a bit impatient with my unfamiliarity with the tiles.
>>14852766
I have a feeling they're all going to be on Saturday afternoons, since that's how these meetings tend to work.
Ah well, maybe when my life circumstances change I'll check in.
>>14852787
You're probably right.
I'm sure they'll be around for a while. It's a small community, after all, which has its pros and cons.
I'll probably be moving back to San Diego after this semester so these next few meetings will probably be the last time I touch actual tiles unless I find people in SD.
>>14852766
I'm local and would love to go. Couldn't this time around due to reasons. Honestly March might be awful thing too but let's give it a shot. I can pick up anyone in the general socal area 5 or 405 freeway or around.

>>14853572
E1:
You discarded 4p way too early. Discard lone honor tiles first.
Same with 7m.
E2:
Same with the 2m.
You broke up a 79p shape to hold onto a ton. It may be dora, but breaking up shapes to hold onto it is going to slow your hand down by quite a bit. You weren't that desperate for points either, so there was no reason to keep it.
Pinfu + a decent wait is usually a better choice than 2 han and a terrible wait that no one will discard.
E3:
You cut the 8s before the ton.
3s from 223s was a really bad discard. You already had plenty of things you could use for a pair, so the ryanmen would have been far more helpful.
Going for toitoi on top of honitsu is really greedy. You already had mangan with just the honitsu+aka+ton.
E4:
Daiminkan usually isn't a good idea. Especially from a closed hand and that far from tenpai.
You should have defended when toimen called riichi. Your hand is shit and a direct hit from the dealer at this point is a guaranteed last place.
E4-1:
Taking the 7s would have given you a better uke-ire (7s and 1s would give you tenpai).
S1:
You should have kept the 4s over the useless 5m. It's important to not tunnel vision too much on a single yaku. Riichi with chun as your pair was a definite possibility here.
S1-1:
You should have cut the 2m over the 9m. The 2m doesn't help you at all, and by throwing away the 9m, you can no longer advance your hand by draw the 7m.
S2:
You should have kept the 2m over the yakuhai.
8s over the hatsu.
5m over the hatsu, etc. You probably would have made tenpai if you dropped that hatsu.
S3:
Keeping the 1m would give you a shot at 123 sanshouku.
You should cut 1p out of 1334p.
Calling for a 1 han hand isn't going to do you any good here. You should have defended.
S4:
Cut the 6m over the 9p.
You should defend here. You need a direct hit haneman to get out of third. That's not happening with your hand, even with ura 3 and ippatsumo.
You need to work on your tile efficiency and remember the importance of last place avoidance.
