In the 1990s, girls' school uniform was changed to a tartan skirt which is uncool if it's long as measures of lengthening of thier skirt in mainly low-level high schools. And boys' one was changed from a gakuran to a blazer, too.
On the other hand, there are many high scholastic ability public high schools which still have classical uniforms like a sailor fuku, three-piece, and gakuran.

In middle school I nearly got jumped by a gang because some guys thought I snitched on them smoking in the toilet to the teachers. You probably have seen this trope in manga numerous times.
Looking back, it was such a trivial issue, which goes to show how juvenile we were, both me and the delinquents.
So a student sees some of his underage peers smoking, so fucking what. Why would he even bother reporting it to the teachers, it's not like this was East Germany where there were rewards for snitching out on others.
Those guys should have realized it, and/or I should have explained this simple reasoning to them.

I always used to get into trouble with them, not just kids either. I always used to come out with a draw even against gangs, because I wasn't really bothered by getting beaten up, I was too angry. I suppose I was also a delinquent too. I was never mean enough to do most of the things kids at my school did like find a missing pets poster, call up the owner and tell them they'd run it over. I just smoked and skipped school, maybe trespassed a few times.
