Is mahjong manga (or really mahjong media) the most imbalanced genre in fan translations, with regards to the ratio of number of series to number of readers/spectators?
It seems to me that even among mahjong manga and anime fans, there's reluctance to go read anything other than Saki (and assorted spinoffs) and Akagi. It's understandable, but it's a shame nevertheless that people who don't know mahjong seem to completely avoid works that feature the game. Shame because I'm not sure that we can say that there is a series that would be a pain to go through if you didn't know the game aside from Ten, and Ten's finale is so great that it'd be worth learning the game just to read that work. Saki's popularity (or maybe I'm just overrating its popularity?) is a bit absurd in this light because it's full of references to mahjong media and history (simplest example, all of the dialogue at the end of the anime episodes reference famous passages in mahjong manga), it's actually pretty heavy on the jong, but does it subtly so to say.
Of course every one of these series become more enjoyable if you actually have some experience in the game, but for example Naki no Ryuu was revolutionary back in its day because it was a mahjong manga that could -and was- read by the general public. Whereas today it looks like not even many mahjong manga fans are touching it even though it's being translated, let alone random manga readers.

I have a tip for you faggots. When you're a complete beginner, play the gamedesign mahjong for 6-12 months. Experiment for yourself what happens when you do a certain something in a situation. Don't close the tab, play at all times, they don't have a timer anyway. Don't even try to memorize the yaku by looking at the convenient yaku list, you'll just forget it later. Play until you absorb all the law by experience. After that you can start playing in tenhou.

At least that's how I did it.

>>
>>14568436
Show me your tenhou stats anon. You can't beat me, I'm a 10-dan player.
>>
>>14568295
If I remember correctly

-(assuming that your hand has at least 1 yaku) If one of your winning tile is in your pond, it's permanent furiten BUT you can win with a tsumo
-If you go for say tanyao and are in tenpai with 78 waiting for 69, if the 9 comes to you and your hand is closed is a menzen tsumo so you win, if it's open and you discard it, permanent furiten so you better change your wait, if another player discards the 9 you're in furiten until it's your turn again
>>
>>14568447
He posted again asking why another hand was furiten when he ponned 9m and the rest of his hand was going for a tanyao.

The kid needs to learn what yaku is first before we get into the technical stuff.
>>
>>14568447
Also remember that if you riichi with a closed hand and pass on a win aiming for either for a bigger hand or to not kill a player, that furiten is until the end of the round, not the end of the turn.
>>
>>14568458
Didn't know that

>>
>>14568458

No, pass on a ron. If you pass on tsumo you will still be forever furiten.

This implied it can be tsumo or ron and he didn't even say anything about it being only for ron after that so yes, it was necessary.
>>
>>14568517
You didn't change anything about what I said though. With both methods of winning (ron and tsumo) the result of passing while riichi'd is a round lasting furiten. What did you correct here?
>>
>>14568559
During riichi it doesn't matter. Passing on a ron is the same as passing on a tsumo.
>>
>>14568570
I think he's confused about the "for a bigger hand" part. Like he only thinks I mean only the yaku for tsumo increasing the hands value, instead of something like the example I hand in mind, san shoku.

How often do anons incorporate complex waits?

I have a few down, namely nobetan, ryanmenten, sanmentan, and pentan.

However, waits like kantankan, tatsumaki and happoubijin are a bit of a stretch for me to memorize atm (hence why I'm making an autist spreadsheet right now).

>>
>>14568628

>>
>>14568656
Eh, I don't know about that. Sometimes it's better to stay damaten until you have a better wait. Unless you have a early hand in tenapi on shanpon wait, (12 or 89 waiting on 3 or 7) since it's probably easier to win than to shift to a better wait at the point. Plus you wouldn't slow down your hand allowing opponents to catch up etc.

Alrighty, good to know! I guess I should incorporate ryantan, too.

>>
>>14569410

>>
>>14569410
Yes

>>14569423
Mahjong is still the #1 most played table game in Japan. Possibly in the entire East Asian region even.
Go and chess are entirely skill dependent games for 2 people, so it's normal that they can't be as popular as mahjong which is played with 4 people and where with enough luck even a novice can beat a super pro.

The game would actually be even more popular in Japan if it didn't have an image of being tied with the underworld and gambling. It seems like people are more likely to get into it when they graduate from high school, and one Japanese friend I have mentioned how in his school people had problems playing the game there due to opposition by teachers.
As an interesting note, he and some others mentioned that Akagi was what interested many of the generation born in the late '80s-early '90s to get into the game.

you had to take the 6sou pon a discard the 5sou

>>

Actually I passed up on a Chi of 2s earlier and then another the next round but it was kind of a long shot and I didn't really need the points anyway.

That's probably the shittiest part about this yakuman.
>>
>>14570312
There are Ryuuiisou configurations that are less shitty though.
>>
Whoa, didn't think I'd see someone from these threads in the ranked lobby.
>>
>>14570749
Who was it?
>>
>>14570769
He's probably talking about me, I think.

The game in question ended just now and was pretty brutal, by the way. Game ended by S1.
>>
Also, I didn't mean to bully you, anon ;_;

It's okay, I'm used to it.

I'm curious. What is the very most amount points that fu can add to a hand?

Unless there's another gogo roaming 0000, I recall you ron'ing the poor sod I had destroyed in east1 with a 24000 Ron, ending the game.

So when I say thanks, I meant thanks for busting that dude and ending the game early while I had a massive lead

Guys is there a place where I can torrent Tohai?
I don't want to watch it through viki, it sucks having to watch it with fucking 5th wave ads playing every 15mins.
I gotta say I am pretty impress with the MC being to remember all the crack tiles in a single session. He is definitely more OP than Akagi.

Pretty sure Adblock works. Or if you know your way around Aegisub, you can help us release the DVD episodes.

Nah, Kei's badass but he's not untouchable like Akagi.
>>
>>14572279
Yeah I guess adblock work but then I have to watch it on my PC.
The other thing is the limitation to 480p for non paying users so it is pretty shitty.
I also didn't know that d-addicts torrent section went down. Where do you guys get jdrama torrent nowadays? Is there a sekrit club?

Why do you need aegissub?
You can rip the sub off viki as srt and then just play the raws using mpc. Even if the timing is off, you can use xyfilter for the timing offset. Care to share the raws at mega? I finally marathon the whole of s1 on viki already though even with the terrible video qualify, seriously Japan need to stop bullying the childhood friend. Shit was brutal, not even Amina got it that bad.

I got a physical mahjong set.

I was so excited to play it, after months of playing online, and even teaching my flatmates and friends.

We did a test game.
Flatmate1 and his girlfriend quit after two hands to watch Sherlock, saying it was 'just a pause'.
Then, two hours later, it was too late to actually keep playing.

I'm not blaming them, I'm aware that the number of people seriously invested in this game must be abysmal outside of Japan, but it still felt kind of lonely, being the only one who cared.

At least I can keep being a shitter in 7447

What really does look retarded is defending a /jp/-thread terminology. 槓子 is a set of four identical tiles that’s named a kong in World Riichi Championship terminology (see above). カン in its turn is a 鳴き, a call. Calling a set of tiles with the name for a call itself – excuse my tautology – isn’t correct no matter how you slice it.
