I think the other anon is right. It might be a beginner's mistake to count dora as a yaku that matters. It should be placed after that big yes.

Is it a dora?
Y: ur a faget
N: furiten
or something like that
>>
>>14498277
Nah, just

>YES! -> Doras don't matter -> NO or UR A FAGET

The chart's schtick is just cutting you off because you're wrong (e.g. FURITEN). Keep it simple.
>>

Well, whatever, as long as it's emphasized that doras don't count.

The young and stupid always rush forwards. They can rush and ignore their disadvantages, they believe in themselves, that they can do it.

But they can't let go of their advantages. They will cling to them as a drowning man to straws, desperate to keep afloat no matter what. Only true men know the difference between advantages, and winning
>>
>>14498695
>But it's better to wait for yakuman (fucking su ankou tanki) than go with just haneman.
Very, very rarely.
Only in the last round when the difference would also mean a placement difference would I even beginn to think about passing a henaman.
>>
>>14498731
It was S3 and direct hit in right player/tsumo would end game on his favor, because one of the player would end without points.
Haneman would be enough if he strike in right player/draw tsumo, so without doubt he fucked up this hand.
Also it was early stage in the game (around seventh discard) and he has a lot of time to wait or change the wait.

Add &ts=X where X is the ordinal number of hand, starting from 0 iirc. I dunno what the mnemonic for ts may be. Time-Step?

>>
>>14498974
If you can end the game right here and right now, you should do it, because it would end like in this game. Sure, in orasu he would need only 3/40 to win game, but you cannot be sure that hand will be good and fast enough.
What's more his shimocha don't have idea what he want to accomplish, so wait a little longer would bring only good things.
>>
>>14498986
Missquote. I want to repeat to this >>14498972
>>
>>14498986
Still, he only had 3 outs for yakuman, which were 5s, which rarely come out and the round was already pretty far, plus the dealer had two open melds. Not calling would be highly risky.
He should have just called riichi there. With riichi he had a good chance for getting at least baiman just by getting either ura-dora, ippatsu or menzen tsumo with both the 4s or the 5s.
>>
>>14499003
As I said before, he could easily change her wait to another tanki. About riichi, I'm no sure - I have feeling that if he wait a little longer, someone else would just discard that 5s - shimocha goes to honitsu and shimocha already discarded 4s and 6s.
Also I noticed that it was last 4s - well, if he wanted to go riichi, he should do it sooner.
>>
>>14499032
>As I said before, he could easily change her wait to another tanki.
Yes, but then he would lose the kanchan wait. Plus the red 5 would be a pretty risky discard. So far no 5s was out and it wasn't suji against the dealer with his two melds.

>shimocha goes to honitsu and shimocha already discarded 4s and 6s.
But he had only discarded the 4s? Also it was impossible to tell that he was going for honitsu, he had discards from every suit.
And yes, the riichi should have been called right when he got into tenpai. The wait wasn't bad at all with the combined tanki + kanchan.

If 7447 - yes. I play there to get big hands and impress poor /jp/sies.
Otherwise - no:
* first place, no need to win big
* current hand is one shan ten, but for chinitsu it needs 3 tiles
* this hand already most likely will be a mangan. And with some luck it can become haneman even without ura doras.
* south player has pon of dragons so he can win fast
>>
>>14499580
Definitely not. You are already in isshanten, discarding a sou tile would slow down the hand immensly.
>>
>>14499608
>but for chinitsu it needs 3 tiles
4 in fact. The hand would lose 2 shanten with a sou discard. This is without a doubt not a good idea.

I'm waiting for my mahjong set and mat, probably going to be here in January.

I can't wait to play with people and actually learn how to play mahjong for real.
Online mahjong is on fucking speed, you have no time to actually form thoughts past really vague assumptions, and even by playing a thousand games you will learn nothing, because you can't read discards and make conclusions in the split second that passes between your discard and the other three.

The only thing I'm getting better at is tile efficiency, but my level of defensive reading is probably the same as when I started playing. All the strategies I've read about are not something I can apply with a scarce 3 seconds at my disposal.
>>
Why is Nodoka ashamed of being cute?
>>
>>14500107
I hope you're getting an automatic table too
>>
>>14500107
I partly agree. I DID get better by playing more games on tenhou, but that is to a large degree thanks to me getting faster, rather than learning new strategies. If you had like double the amount of time per turn I could have probably played as well as I do now after ~400 games right from the start and could have invested the effort into learning new strategies instead of just speed. There really should be a slow game option on tenhou, if nothing else it would definitely be good for learning.
>>
>>14500107
Are you nuts, tenhou is so damn slow! I keep thinking COME ON DISCARD ALREADY YOU FUCKING SNAIL
>>
>>14497798
that feeling when a player gets a big lead in the early game and you get really close to cathing up but game ends

this feeling of defeat is terrible
>>
>>14500107
Tenhou's timer is very generous, to the point that playing with newbies in 7447 can sometimes be tedious when they're slow. What exactly is it that takes you so long when making decisions? Counting up your ukeire, evaluating how safe a tile is, or what? You don't need to do these things each and every time, because with experience you'll already know what the best choice is.
>>
>>14500183
Not him but the situation that really take time are those when you play a mixed offensive/defensive style. At worst you have to consider kabe, suji plus information from open melds against various opponents, as well as the uke-ire of your own hand at the same time. How the fuck am I supposed to do that in ~ 5 seconds.
>>
>>14500199
It really does become much easier when you have more experience. Even then, you have 5+10 seconds, plus the time your opponents take.
>>
>>14500218
I always rush my moves so my opponents have less time to think.
>>
>>14500218
>Even then, you have 5+10 seconds, plus the time your opponents take
The situation can change very quickly though, by a player declaring riichi or an open meld for example. It certainly gets better, but I'd still prefer it if you had more time so the game would actually be more about who has the best strategy. Look at online poker sites for example. Poker is far simpler than mahjong in terms of the information you have to consider, yet most poker sites will give you around 20s for your turn.

Do you actually know people who know how to play and/or are willing to play?

I have like three different sets (two unopened) and I'm in PA and can't find anyone. Even when I offer to learn Cantonese style, people still refuse because they all hate mahjong.

If you would continue the normal scoring the hands would get huge very fast. And with huge I'm talking about millions and billions or even more points here. This would completely fuck up the balance of the game since small hands, riichi payments or honba would basically become pointless.

Discard them early in the game instead of keeping them and opting to discard actually good tiles. If someone pon'd them, just defend against them when necessary.
>>
>>14504659
If somebody is waiting to pon them, it means you have a lower chance of getting multiples and, if you're gonna discard them, it's best to do it early on when they'll be pon'd instead of ron'd.
>>
>>14504637
You're only supposed to keep them if you have a pretty good assumption that your opponent is waiting on that tile based on his seat and his discards. Keeping it till midgame then throwing it by then is pretty useless. It's a different case when you draw it midgame and it's a live tile. In that case that would be dangerous and it is just right to keep it .

I don't see at all how 5566 is bad. It has effective tiles 4,5,6,7 with 12 uke-ire.

It depends on your hand. If you don't have a pair yet, it's great, otherwise not really. Imagine this hand:

123m / 56s / 5566p / 99p / FFF

If you discard 5s/6s you have 4p,5p,6p,7p,9p = 14 uke-ire
If you discard 5p you have 4s,7s,4p,6p,7p,9p = 20 uke-ire.
>>
>>14506231
At last I truly see.
I guess in the end everything just goes back to manually counting the uke-ire for your hand.

I can't like Saki. If I had to rank the three series about mahjong I've watched it'd be Saki => Tetsuya >>> Akagi

It's just that saki is too magical. There's no strategy, they all just have this powers like "she draws all the doras, and that other one makes all the kans, and that other one always ippatsu". It's boring.

Yeah yeah, I know, Akagi is kinda magical too. But at least he explains some of the things he does, be it cheating or going all psychological-magical, like the 2 pin wait, or how he stops washizu with those pones making him break his tenpai. Saki is just.. no strategy. Things happen because lesbian powers.

The idea is not to be realistic, it is to be entertaining. If it was perfectly realistic games then it would not be as interesting because there would be more luck and less skill involved, and given the nature of the tournament it would seem completely arbitrary which teams won given how few games were played. It is better that it is a match of how strong each players skills/powers are than just who gets luckier.
Saki is not intended as a hardcore mahjong series, and instead is just an SoL series with mahjong as a focus, with a target audience who are not pro players and instead just play mahjong for fun, if at all

It's called "Oh fuck, I kept this useless tile hoping to make something of it and now some guy is obviously going for tiles of this suit so I better hurry up and throw it out in hopes that he isn't in tenpai yet." It happens to people who are lost in hope.

Guess I'll sit in lobby while I try to coherently explain that the red dora 5p guy was iishanten and he had shitty waits even if he did get into tenpai.
>>
>>14509330
he was iishanten.

>drawing 1m
would have a shanpon wait (1s or 2s).
>drawing 1s
he can either discard 1s to wait on 1m or discard 1m to have a ryanmen wait on 2s and 5s.
>drawing 2s
shanpon wait on 1s or 2s after discarding 1m
>drawing 5s
shanpon wait on 1s or 2s after discarding 1m.

Probably missed some since I'm playing in 7447 right now, but yeah. He had minimal prospects of winning.

inb4 the other three 2m are in her hand. Meanwhile she thinks only of ryanmen like she plays against some hillbillies from Okinawa.

This hand scores kazoe yakuman by itself. And if you apply aotenjuu…
>>
>>14510788
>And if you apply aotenjuu…
Suu Kantsu
Open Chinitsu
4 dora
Tanyao
Rinshan Kaihou
= 24 han

Also the hand should have 70 fu if I count correctly.
70*2^(2+24)*4 since tsumo by non-dealer = 18.790.481.920 points

Spectator here, don't be so sure about that. His South 4 and West 1 starting hands we're great. It's kind of a pity he disconnected.
>>
>>14510991
Are you referring to the game I posted? Actually 2 players disconnected. It was just me and that super lucky guy who won almost every single hand in the end. I just barely managed to make 2nd place against two disconnected opponents. 3rd place had the exact same amount points, but I was dealer when the game ended.

Do any mahjong manga show a vicious dealer streak and the despair it causes?

>>
>>14511602
Akagi has him adding honba even though it was 4th South round so that he could nip Washizu's money-line while he had the chance.
>>
>>14511608
I'm working through that already.

>>14511717
But isn't Washizu already full-on despair regardless of that? The despair itself isn't important, it's seeing somebody's dreams slowly rot as the dealer spams open tanyao, yakuhai, and riichi nomi hand after hand.
>>
>>14511731
He actually becomes glad when Akagi keeps adding honba since that's giving HIM chance to kill Akagi as well.

Until he realizes his money's all gone. Then the despair kicks in.
>>
>>14511737
How many times exactly has Akagi built up Washizu only to knock him down now? Is it enough times that Washizu should have learned by now?

Before I started watching Saki, I was wondering if any of the players would have the gimmick of being "cursed" with bad luck, but it's predictable bad luck and thus actually makes them better.

It's the safest tile to discard for later, when other player hands start to become more dangerous to deal with.

Though, Ton and Chun were also relatively safe too. Sure, a little bit of efficiency is sacrificed; but all the other tiles discarded beforehand were worthless too.

Once that 3-pin came, then it was time to let go of that haku to finally make room for the rest of the hand.

The name was Tohai iirc and it's a manga adaptation. There's links on the Osamuko blog too I think.
