I want HISTORY. can you look in the depths of your folders to see the oldest files that contain any history or culture from old jp? I would love to collect some of it up for old times sake..
I know most of the posters from old times have "moved on" but here's hoping..
Trust me, /jp/'s history is terrible. This might just have been be the single worst board on 4chan in the past. It's so bad it's hysterical.

No, they don't. Everyone thinks this place is awful.
The reality is that, however shitty /jp/ has gotten, it actually is one of the better boards, in the sense that it retains some of the old spirit of 4chan. Which is probably the only reason I stick around here, even if I barely open any threads anymore.
I passed JLPT N1 since the split just because. That's my history.

You have no idea what you're talking about. There's nothing in this place currently that resembles old 4chan. You can get away with saying that some generals gather good discussion, which certainly is true, but there's nothing that resembles old 4chan. This was a lively board with an actual sense of community and creativity, and even in its worst times it still had the latter, but now it's just a void. Actually, not now. Since quite a few years.

There are a lot of people who explain /jp/'s history back in 2012 because they were filled with nostalgia and were still willing to put up with all the shit in the board. Of course, your best bet is going through 2008~2010. Only do this if you're a NEET though, you'll be going through thousands of threads. I would do it when I was feeling nostalgic last year. It hurts so much. I should just leave this place again.

So many people that browse here are disgusted at the thought of old 4chan.
4chan used to be a place filled with tripcodes and attention-whoring out the ass.
It used to be filled with forced memes every single day.
Regular mass-bans by Snacks were considered "pretty fun".
Tripcode cracking was a fun activity done by others, which is why the "secure tripcodes for jerks" banner came about when the bigger attention-whores went secure-trip.
And the biggest one of all, a lot of old Yotsubites knew each other. In real life. Actual friends. Some even in anime clubs. And went to 4chan conventions. RIP /con/.
But the main difference is everyone got on, for the most part. Everyone knew what made each other laugh. They all shared fairly common interests.
4chan was even known about by most large and small forums, and it was still perfectly fine.
Forced Anonymous was the ultimate end, the thing that killed it all. It was forced on a community that didn't want it. A community that could not give a single shit about the merits of anonymous discussion, besides a handful of shitposters. All because that wank menchi.
Then, to pour salt in the wound, invisible moderation. ("Dun wanna disturb the thraed")
A year after that crap happened, this site was a total 180 from what it was.
Overchan was the one of the worst things to happen to imageboard culture after that. It diluted it so much and just led to CP being posted on smaller slow-modded boards.
Some hints of old 4chan culture lived on on some other smaller sites, but combined with other general imageboard culture as well to form their own niche interests.
SovietRussia was a special place. I miss SR/z/.

I was actually one of the people who fanatically supported forced anon when it first happened. I hated the /z/ tripfag crowd and wtfux, and believed that the only way arrogant goons and other ignorant Westerners used to the post counts and avatars of phpBB would ever accept the superior Japanese culture of humble anonymous posting was if it was forced on them.
By the time /jp/ rolled around and we had the "golden age" of /jp/ tripfags, I had mellowed out enough to accept them for what they were and enjoy their antics.
And of course now I become super nostalgic when thinking about all the old /b/ tripfags I used to hate, even though I still believe that anonymous posting is the most efficient and enjoyable mode of online communication. Nostalgia goggles in action.
When people like me boast that the spirit of old 4chan is still alive on /jp/, I think what we actually mean is that compared to most other boards a proportionately higher number of /jp/ers have been using 4chan for longer. I feel that the fact that conversations like this one are relatively common proves that point. The culture of /jp/ itself is, like you said, nothing like that of old 4chan.

I remember reading Umineko discussion without having read the VNs. I tried the first one but got bored after 30 minutes or so. Just reading the threads on /jp/ was more interesting.
