Modern American culture strikes me as particularly degenerate. As for the underlying broadly Western culture, Japan has already borrowed greatly from it, to the point that modern Japan cannot really be compared to the Japan of old.

I had my huge Japan-phase from 2000 to 2008 in which I discovered and consumed all kinds of Japanese music, trash, movies etc. When I look at stuff from back then, I suddenly realise how much time has passed and how old everyone got (including me).

The first truly Japanese thing I remember running into was Ai Otsuka's Sakuranbo. It had an extremely high energy that I fell in love with immediately despite not understanding a word of it. I don't remember when or where. It was at the time in my life when I thought Megatokyo was hot shit and spent time dicking around random graphics forums trying to show off my l33t graphics skills and anime girl photoshops.
Five years after that (which is five years ago now) I came to 4chan and my life ended. Checked back on those little forums and seems like they all died a few years back.
Same with this one. I remember being really attracted to Tomiko Van back then, because I loved her voice. Seeing her aged and having kids made me feel really old.

Hey, 2016 is coming up quick! Which Touhou should all of the Americans on /jp/ write in on election day? It won't do any good if we all write in different Touhous so we should start deciding on one now!
The way I see it, our options are:
1. Miko - she can listen to ten times as many requests as other candidates, making her ten times as productive at being president
2. Kanako - focus on industry and alternative energy sources could help with peak oil crisis
3. Reimu - canon undefeated, just like America
4. Kaguya - instead of waging stupid wars she'd just take it easy
5. Reisen - hard working, knows how to dress for success
6. Satori - can read people's hearts, so she would know the best way to take action in our interests (strict upgrade over Miko IMO)
7. Remilia - cute loli vampire
8. Rinnosuke - a guy
9. Cirno - in all honesty Cirno probably should not be president (but that's just my opinion)
10. Seija - we've had a rough couple of decades but she could really turn this country around
11. Hecatia - one to control each branch of the government
