Because in countries that people starve in the streets it is expected from you to help your fellows if you can, unless you want to get gibbed when you are the one needing food.

In poor countries living on your own is a social status.
In rich countries more people living on their own translates to it becoming the norm.
Culture has very little to do with it, maybe an Italian would move out to live in another block and then run trough his mama for dinner when coming home from work.
An America would move 10 states over.
