Its essentially a man-portable organ. The organ was invented by the greeks, and as eastern europe inhereted civilization from the greeks instead of not doing it at all like western europe did, there is a fondness for it.

A standard keyboard is probably easier for people who know how to play standard keyboarded instruments. Those buttons work as keys. Though as far as i know there are a lot of redundant keys on the button type in different positions, probably makes it easier to play chords if you know what you are doing.
