Because domino theory, you dumb shit. Notice that America only got involved in the European theater of WW2 (directly I mean) in 1944. This wasn't because they couldn't have joined earlier, but because they were happy to watch the Nazis and Commies beat the shit out of eachother until they were both exhausted. Shit got serious when the Soviets started curbstomping Nazi division after Nazi division. The landings in Normandy weren't so much a noble liberation as they were a race to Berlin. Because the Americans took so long to get involved, half of Europe ended up communist, and it was rapidly spreading in Asia.
This led to the development of domino theory.

This is the belief that if communism prevailed in one country, it would spill over to surrounding countries. Communism was therefore something that needed to be contained. This is on the one hand why West Germany survived WW2 with just a slap on the wrist and even got money to rearm itself (let me repeat that: Nazi Germany got American money to re-arm itself) and on the other hand why America got involved in wars in Korea, Vietnam and the Bay of Pigs that would forever show the world that American military achievements are incredibly underwhelming if other countries don't do the heavy lifting for them.
There is no competition with communism.
People aren't allowed to reap the results of their labor and abilities, it all goes for redistribution.
It creates a inefficient system aimed at achieving arbitrary goals decided from the top down with no input from the people.
You end up with bitter population that lacks the initiative to make anything of themselves even after it escapes the one party system.
You end up with a worthless economy, that can't stand up to foreign imports.
The only reason commies were ever scary is because they desired to bring that misery to every country on this planet.
