How do Russians feel about their language and alphabet? Are they often ashamed of how ugly it is?

No, but it's impossible to get rid of ugly russian accent while speaking literally every other language, some people ashamed of it.

Sure the accent is rather hard to hide when they speak any language, but no one should be ashamed of themselves.

I think when people try to hide their accents while speaking english it sounds a lot worse desu.

Diacritic spam gets annoying really fast - czech Check language for example. It's an ugly hac[e]k anyway.

Might as well spam digraphs AND diacritics as in Polish... Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz might want to have a word with you.

Cyrillic on the other hand already has the resources needed for languages with iotated vowels and stuff like that.

Also: išio? ишиo?
>>
>>62162321
English spelling rules were made by drunk monk[ey]s trying their hardest to make some Barbarian dialect to look like Latin.

If you want to see proper usage of the Latin alphabet, check Italian. And even then they need hacks, and up to this date /ts/ and /dz/ still share the same letter (Z).

I'll show you an example with akanie instead:
бopoдa becomes barada
бopoды becomes borady
You're changing the radical of a word _when spelled_ and adding an irregularity where there is none - the underlying phoneme is still /o/, not /a/.

For ikanie, the same applies. It's still an /je/, even if pronounced as [ı].

I prefer the morphological principle myself, but this is retarded. If these two phonemes are always merged in this position, then there's absolutely no reason to pretend they're still different just because you can guess them by another form of the word. The "kak slyšcə tak y pišcə" principle is not very practical for languages like Russian, but it doesn't mean it has no right to exist at all.

>If these two phonemes are always merged in this position, then there's absolutely no reason to pretend they're still different just because you can guess them by another form of the word.
The thing is, are the _phonemes_ merging or just their pronunciation? IMHO the underlying units are still different.

Also, not all accents do those merges; like in the map >>62162990 posted, Northerners in general don't, and ideally you want to represent the language in a way suitable to most accents.

Anyway. Main point with eщё was the consonant; Latin alphabet has a small stock of letters for those. The palatalization of E doesn't need to be written as long as you give Э something else, so this would make both išjo and ešjo equally easy to write.

Belarussian has the alternate latin alphabet, lyrics of the belarusian version in latin. (But honestly I think Belarus should speak Polish.)

Jana pramokła ŭsia naskroź -

Noč za try, balić hałava -

Sahreje kipniem dźvie ruki
Daždžu nazło haz.
Na stoł asiadzie ciažki par,
Zmutnieje škło ŭraz.

>>62164112
I'm pretty sure that the main reason for the "weirdness" (from my point of view) of the Russian language is that you haven't modernized it enough, here the communists made everything simple back in the 40s or 50s.

>here we removed nearly all of the cases
Languages don't work like that. Your literary language doesn't use the cases simply because most of the Bulgarian dialects have dropped them, not because the communists wanted to make the language simpler. Our situation is absolutely different.
>>
our alphabet is pretty, dunno what you are on

i dont particularly like how russian sounds though but it's not nearly as ugly as finnish that's for sure
>>
>>62161878
Why?
I am very proud of it, beautiful strong language., gave much to this world. It's a gift.

Finnish languages used to have cases until Agricola decided they were inefficient and dropped them from our literary language. Now a few hundred years later all finns speak in monotone
