The reason americas system is good is because we have two seperate houses. One house has representatives based on the population of each state, the other house has a fixed number of representatives per state. These houses have to agree on something.
This ensures that a few populated states cant overrule the wishes of a large number of less populated ones, and likewise it also ensures that a bunch of less populated ones can not override the desires of the majority of the people.
This is why its a good system. It protects people from the tyrany of the masses, as well as protecting the masses from tyrany.
Everything in our government is designed to make it difficult for the government to actually do things unless its both seen as a good idea by the few AND the many, and thats why weve yet to have to overthrow it.

Each state is self governing beyond those rules, has its own police forces, own military forces, and is essentially a fully functional country. Is he really nuking the TPP? How is he going to deal with American corporations outsourcing jobs? Which corps are going to be affected and how will they respond? can they relocate? Is Trump really going to borrow money on the hreat he can "renegotiate whenever he wants to? How is his new relationship with NATO affecting US and EU military spending? What about the Saudis dumping American debt? What if the Chinese follow their lead? You see, there's a couple dozen questions more and everything from his healthcare plan to how he deals with ISIS has economic ramifications, imagine trying to predict how Trump thinks and what he'll do. Should investors run to gold? What's going to happen to commodities if China slows down even more?
Mexico will be where the lightning hits first and hardest because one of the few certainties will be Trump will try in some way to get Mexico to pay for the wall, it's one of the few things he can't change his mind about. Who's going to be putting money in Mexico then? Are you willing to gamble either Trump or Mexico yields?
