Here's the World Factbook list for comparison. Not much different, but it helps to see what other countries can also qualify (i.e. balts and czechoslovakia). Personally, I think South Africa and Taiwan are in transition, but fuck would I know.

I know South Africa wasn't part of BRIC(S) until 2010, which isn't a surprising fact considering its volatile background and weak dollar, but the overall situation is better compared to the global average. The Afrikaners and Britons had much to help with that, so I think South Africa deserves a mention.
