That's impression I got. Never felt in danger because it didn't feel like downtown was even permanently inhabited. The waterfront near the renaissance center seems like its going to transform soon. I currently live in New York outside the city but my family is from New England (specifically Massachusetts) and I'm there often and will probably live there after college is done.
New York is complete and utter ass because NYC+Long Island is a cesspool (NYC itself is fine but every single person that inhabits it is shit, Long Island is throughly shit, almost worse than New Jersey) and the rest of it gets shot in the foot by NYC's retarded politics so it is poor. Upstate is mostly post-industrial or poor rural, and then Ithaca which is a college town and Albany which is corrupt.

We're primary known for Chicago (3rd largest U.S. city, basically a tryhard New York wannabe and the capital of the Midwest) and horrible corruption (both in Chicago and at the state level). After the industry all died, Mayor Daley used his mob magic to prevent us from becoming another Cleveland or (God-forbid) Detroit, but it still might happen yet.
The rest of the state consists of burnt-out, rust belt satellite cities of Chicago, and farms. Along the coast of Lake Michigan, north of the city, there are a bunch of insanely rich, snobby little suburbs that you might know from the films of John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Home Alone).
Also of note, we have a fuckton of coal, and all of the major railroads converge here (which is how Chicago happened).

I live in Maryland, I would never live anywhere else. Holy shit, when I visited some southern states and Midwest states, I was surprised, I thought I visited a third world shithole. Maryland (not including Baltimore and Baltimore county) has a really small population, but we have so many millionaires, I live in a average middle class neighborhood and we look like millionaires when compared to other states "middle class" the blacks we do have act identical to white people (outside Baltimore) and it's fucking easy to find a job. Look at the nation's wealthiest counties, Maryland is almost entirely colored (all except Baltimore and Baltimore county). Our weather is great, women are great, food is great, and we are a perfect mix of liberal and conservative. If you are going to be a middle class person, Maryland is where it is the best.

Not EVERYONE is Mormon (although, my family is mormon and I was raised lds), it's more 50/50, and there are LDS churches every few blocks. Families are huge, and people marry really young. It's odd to see people that are 25+ that aren't married and have at least one kid.

I know it's a little late but Wichita never gets mentioned here so I'll tell you. It's around 250k pop and a good mix of everything. You have shit neighborhoods and rich as hell ones and everything in-between. Blacks, beaners but mostly whites. The town is older so everything in the city is more compact I think. Not just endless suburbs like newer places. Architecture is just different styles throughout the 20th century. You can find all sorts of people here even though it's surrounded by corn fields forever. SJWs conservatives, weebs, religious nuts, stoners, and everything else. The town politically leans conservative and has very auster policies and is the home of the Koch brothers who are worth 80 billion, very into politics and fucking run this state. Pennack here, Philadelphia is the sick man of the state, and Pittsburgh is alot nicer bit has too many Croats and shitty roads. Harrisburg is generally just a smaller and much better looking version of Phili. State College is a miniature Paris in the sense that it's full of non-whites and steals tourism from the better towns around it. Erie is pretty calm but gets plenty of snow. The border with New York is extremely boring, Ohio's border is mainly farmland, Maryland's is a tourist trap, and New Jersey's is hell on Earth. The rest are nice towns with great asthetic due to the mountains, lakes, and forests that cover the land. Overall it's a Maine but more blacks and it doesn't have to pretend it has a culture.

Cali and Washington have laws that protect illegal and legal immigrants from getting deported, they also have laws that extend most citizen rights to immigrant. Like in Washington and Cali you could get a drivers license even if you are in the country illegally.

Can confirm, Utah has shitty drivers. They cut off big-rigs only to slam on the brakes, cut through 3 or 4 lanes of traffic to make an exit, speed through construction zones, they will floor the accelerator to pass you up as their lane is ending because they don't want to be behind you. All states have their shitty drivers, but Utah is the epitome of "Jesus, take the wheel".

Philadelphia: Dangerous at night, but revered by many as a great "secrete" for someone who wants an east coast city but doesn't want NYC or Boston. Do NOT go into Chester.
Philly outer suburbs: I've heard people praise it a lot. We're one of the wealthiest regions in the entire nation. McMansions are abound. We produce some pretty smart people if I do say so myself, lots of Ivy Leaguers, whiz kids, etc. Not sure how it compares to other suburbs in the US. Pretty boring though.
Central PA: You have State College, and then you have the Amish nestled in beautiful valleys. Their towns are old as hell. A very unique experience but not somewhere I would want to live.
Northeast PA: Lots of forest with numerous tiny rural towns dotted around. The people there are friendly, and keep their mindset around what's happening in their corner of the state.
Pittsbugh: I've never been, but I hear a lot of great things about it. The people I've met from Western PA have been a bit more friendly than people in the urban east, but the tradeoff is when I've run into an unfriendly person from western PA, they are insufferable.

Lots of dangerous flora and fauna, if you were to go out in the Everglades for more than a day alone you will die.
The drug stereotype is certainly true, bath salts are very popular among high-schoolers and the like. I have done bath salts (methylone) and I am a normal guy.
Lots of the strange crime here is committed by drug addicts. A staggering amount of people are hooked on painkillers and benzos which leads to crime.
I love the state for it's nature and beaches and climate, the people aren't great.
Neighboring states are Georgia and Alabama. Georgia is okay, Alabama is a shithole if you aren't going to college.
I have been to 40 of the 50 states and out west they are very nice but something about living in a big swamp is very nice to me.

I'm from Chicago, which is in Illinois. The North Side and the Loop (downtown) are pretty based, but the West and South Sides are almost Detroit-tier outside of Hyde Park. It's by far one of the most insecure cities out there and pretty corrupt, but it's pretty nice IMO especially when you know where to go, ultimately a 7/10 total and a 9/10 for the good parts.
As for the rest of the state, it's okay I guess, just a lot of corn, Peoria and Springfield, and, outside of East St. Louis which is an even bigger shithole than the bad parts of Chicago, basically Middle America.

Northwest Indiana is right beside Chicago and includes some nice parts like Crown Point and some not nice parts like Gary. The rest of the state is similarly Middle America.

St. Louis's good parts and downtown are pretty good, and the Arch is alright, but not much compared to Chicago. The rest of the state is rather rural other than Kansas City (which is IIRC the biggest rail hub in the US outside of Chicago).

Also very rural, but without any major urban centers such as Chicago or St. Louis. It's the best Rural IMO, however, as it's cozy without having too much of the evangelical and hickish craziness of the other border states and is dotted with many cozy towns. Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge is a must-see if you're ever on I-80 in the area.

Cheese and Beer, and Milwaukee, the closest thing to a mini-Chicago (even closer than St. Louis). Also very hilly and forested in contrast to Chicago's being flatter than your mom. Pretty Cozy, IMO. Ditto (minus the Cheese and Beer) to Michigan outside of Flint and Detroit, although it only has a water border with Illinois.
