I mostly worked in the Congo but did visit Angola for a few months since one of the other teams there had only one guy who spoke portuguese and he bailed and they needed a replacement badly.
One of the things that is common to both of these countries(and I suspect the rest of the continent) is the need to have cash in handy since EVERYTHING requires bribes.

The line between common thugs and the army is also really blurred, one day we had to bail out of a village south of Bukavu because one group of Mai-Mai "soldiers" were moving in to the village and they REALLY don't like westerners, as we were putting everything back in the truck and ready to leave we literally saw villagers giving money to the Congo soldiers who were with us so they can stay and defend the town, I asked our guide(a very based person I might add, the guy lived through the kivu conflict, lost an arm and an eye and STILL works all around the Congo bringing food and medicine to anyone in need) if this was normal and he said villagers around the country have to give "tribute" to soldiers so they stay and don't simply leave the town to its fate.
It was thanks to moments like these I realized how fucked Africa was, civilization for them is an alien word.
