Just make sure you pick a mate you like being with even when you aren't screwing, that's the most important thing long term.

In that case you don't really need to. Most people suck at starting conversations btw, so it's really easy to do since a lot of people fundamentally want to talk and blabber on about stuff, but they need an opportunity to do so.
Personally I start conversations about people's clothing often, it's easy to say "Hey that's a cool shirt where'd you get it?" And they start talking about all this other shit and a conversation forms.
