in case you're curious:
codfish is only available in very cold waters, like northern europe and eastern north america
the portuguese "discovered" (for western scientific purposes anyway, the vikings had already landed there) newfoundland and labrador (literally a portuguese word). we fished there for hundreds of years. thanks to alliance with england we were allowed to take everything we wanted from there.
this things of fishing in very far away places is common in a lot of iberian traditions including for instance the basque (who used to fish in iceland)
anyway, these treaties continued even after canada gained independence. they only ended when portugal entered the european union. by then, bacalhau was very strong in portuguese culture and had entered the stereotype in foreigners eyes.
ever since then, we import them from norway. norway has a massive fishing industry. we lost all of our fishing industry since then. portugal is the 3rd largest fish consumer in the world and the main importer from norway. so i guess t-thanks EU?
