Lots of people spend 5 years learning useless languages like Japanese and gain nothing. If you spend 5 years learning Mandarin you are guaranteed good employment and financial benefit.

Meanwhile China at least in the main cities will have a far higher human development than anywhere else in Asia. Booming global business scene and a great outlook.
Mandarin learners now are securing themselves a rich and successful career. Japanese learners might aswell pair it with a degree in history so they can better understand the ruins.
