Sorry fellow burger, Europe does not lack in diversity as much as most Americans think, and what lesser amount of diversity there is is directly because of that centralization that you're talking about.
France has been trying to replace all French dialects with Parisian for a couple centuries. They've also been trying to kill two native, non French languages for just as long, Occitan and Breton. Occitan is as good as dead based onits demographic status, though Breton may be able to make a ce back, despite continued attempts by the French government to kill it.
The domination of Germany by certain dialects is also well documented, and feeds into the (admittedly fruitless) attempts by Bavaria to be independent, as their Bavarian dialect and culture are strong enough to resist centralization and assimilation.
Prior to the developmemt of the strong nation state and centralization Europe is known for, there was much more diversity, and there is even still quite a bit. What you are talking about isn't the reason why centralization was chosen, it exists only because of efforts of centralization.
