Today is the Upper House election in Japan.
Ruling LDP and its allies are set to win more than 2/3 of contested seats.
That would enable Shinzo Abe cabinet's long-sought goal of re-writing Japanese post-WWII constitution.
This wouldn't only involve repealing article 9, which ensures that Japan is a pacifist country, but also strengthen PM's emergency powers, restrict press freedom, abolish separation of church and state and promote nationalism.
That would be a major setback for Japanese democracy and would set Japan on a path toward illiberalism.

Let's just do some quick math here. Let's assume the replacement rate is 2.0 (in reality, it's slightly higher, but let's just assume). So, in other words, 1 child per person. Let's be generous and round up Japan's fertility rate to 1.5. That means that, for every person, there's only 0.75 being born. So, if you wanted to compensate and have the same demographics as a 2.0 fertility rate, that would mean needing 25% of your population in immigration. Now, IRL there are other mechanisms at play, such as population lag/momentum, but eventually, in the long term, if you want to compensate for natural demographic loss with immigration, this is more or less what you'll be doing. And then it continues, because more than likely the Japanese's birthrate will still be just as low.
Bottom line: you cannot fix a low fertility rate with immigration. It's not feasible in the slightest. At best you can use it as a temporary bandaid as western countries are currently doing, but the problem will not be fixed, even once the baby boomers are dead.
So, I ask you again, how would you fix Japan's demographic problem?
