I was assigned as an intern at a software development firm by my school, and the guys there decided to "invest" in me. I'm in my second year of high-school, but I won't be going back there next year. Instead, I'm going to spend that time working with them &, later, getting employed full-time.
I was also offered a part-time job, in case I decide to enroll in uni once I'm formally done with my mandatory educational cycle.
I got pretty lucky - that's for sure -, but it's also not hard to stand out in this country. If you have a decent work ethic, you'll easily be recognized for that.

I have to make the environmental impact assessments when needed, as part of the company's way of knowing if the project we are financing has all the legal requirements, and of course, a future for us to get the money back.
I studied 8 years, my dream was to be a great researcher in the field of ornithology, I was supposed to get a job at a research facility to get experience and publish anything to be accepted on a PhD program anywhere, but here I am, 5 years after that. I work in a small town old folk's home which is basically a mental institution considering it's essentially a place where people are dropped off and abandoned by their families.
We have 50-60 senior citizens at any given time, over half have severe disabilities and about 2 dozen adults with mental disabilities. Everything from down syndrome to schizophrenia.
We have inadequate funding and staffing so I have a lot of roles depending on our staffing from cooking, cleaning, giving out medication, etc even though my official role is a "janitor".
I do my best and try to spend time and listen to the patients, but this is really hell on earth. Everyone who works here quits within a week. There are only 3 long term employees in the entire building still.
I'm paid $12 / hour but given a small bonus when something especially foul comes up. But hey, I'm a depressed high school drop out who has never had a gf. No one wants me either.
To top it off, 2 months ago I found a patient who I had befriended hanging in his bedroom closet. He had committed suicide. He was 65 years old and suffered a brain injury from a car accident. His wife abandoned him here 5 years ago and only visited him on holidays acting as if he was a child the entire time. The last time I talked to him he asked me if I believed in God and I told him yes. He asked me if I thought he'd go to heaven and I said yes. He seemed fine at the time. I knew this kid that everyone used to fuck with all the time in Higschool.
After we graduated, I saw him at a supermarket pushing around carts and stuff, and a few of the guys who graduated with me started making fun of him behind his back every time they came in for groceries, saying he was in a dead end job and that's all he would be doing for the rest of his life.
I felt pretty bad, especially since I kind of used to fuck with him back in Highschool too, so I started trying to be nice to him; and he opened up to me a lot. Talked a lot about upcoming video games, and how he wanted to take swimming lessons with all his hard earned money. I guess he was just happy someone wasn't fucking around with him for once.
He seemed alright, and I was so surprised at how happy he seemed about life, but apparently, while I was in the next state over, he bought a gun into the store, started pointing it at all the shoppers, and finally just kind of turned it on himself and shot himself in the middle of the checkout aisle.
No one even really noticed when he started waving his gun around. Everyone was just too busy buying their groceries. He only had one bullet in the gun.
