Not OP, obviously, but as a Russian speaker I can read Belarusian fluently, and understand most things when I hear it, and think it would be easy to fake the spoken language (I've never tried). It's much like the relationship between Spanish and Portuguese in South America, but the pronunciation isn't as different.

Before the whole energy crisis in 2009 started Russia warned European countries repeatedly that Ukraine is unstable transit country and that we will not tolerate them stealing gas (why do you think the whole bird stream project started?). When Ukraine refused to pay we simply cut them off.
Why should we send them gas for free? It's not like Europe was gonna compensate for that. And it's our main source of income. We may be a "gas station" but gas stations never give you anything for free.
3. Most ex-USSR countries get gas with a big decrease in price compared to European countries. Russia also pays them for transit a lot. For most of them that is the only reliable source of income.
Tl.dr: all those whining ex-USSR shitholes are parasites that like to get free shit and they think russia must give them anything.
