Yellow is actually a higher visibility color than red. After numerous fire truck collisions resulting in fatalities world wide, they went with yellow. Also against a fire at night, it does not blend into the ruddy red glow so much. Many townships use yellow, but the best ones use reflective yellow paint, similar in effect to what you would see on a safety belt.
