Why are Germans obsessed with the Roman Empire even though they were never part of it and were of one of the main causes of it's downfall?
German culture is impacted by the Roman...
so it makes sense to understand it and identitfy with it to some extent. Having some insight on Latin for example makes you understand German better.

Basically nationalism myth is that we were the babaric tribes that brought downfall to the roman empire.
Basically the person that managed to defeat large parts of the roman army and made the romans give up on the plan of turning territories east of the Donau/Rhein into provinces is seen as the father of the german nation.
They even invaded our Roman lands.
