I tried lots of places in America. CA, CO, UT, ME, and TN, plus I spent long vacations in MA, NY, OR, ND, and WA, also my dad is a long distance truck driver so I have traveled through all of the contiguous 48 states, many several times.
There are things and people I like in every state I've spent time in, but the best state for me was Maine, and it's basically just a slightly less nice version of the Canadian Maritimes, where I am now, in New Brunswick
