This is a misunderstanding of the protestant work ethic.
You work not for rewards but because work is ethical. E.g. because work is it's own reward and a way to give meaning to your existence.
It is conceptually divorced from being either a "good goy" or a predatory capitalist. Putting food on the table is not related to work in this sense.

This leads to great difficulties because they attach morality to money. Money has no morality, neither has bread.
If one considers productive work to be good in itself and then do not care about success then one can take the view of just taking care of "useless people" without having to complicate things and still encouraging them to be productive citizens.
