Good question.
The States are larger in the West, too, so it's probably related.
Maybe it's because of the various technological advancements that happened during expansion.

list is slightly misleading, as metro areas is probably a better way to rank cities in the US instead of city limit pop.
Cities out west appear to be "larger" because they have large city limits, densely packed with very small amount of people in the surrounding area
