It's literally speech-to-text. You get audio files of conferences or interviews, and you write what you hear.
Some places offer $20 per audio hour transcribed. You get files that are anywhere between 30 seconds to 10 minutes long. To transcribe an audio hour, it'll take you anywhere between 6 and 12 hours, depending on how fast the fags are talking and how good the quality is.
The service doesn't exist because audio files are easy to transcribe. If they were, transcriptionists wouldn't exist. It's often shit-tier files with shit-tier, muffled sound. White noise, background noise, people chimping out and laughing in the background, etc.
You really gotta make sure it's your thing. A lot of times shit's frustrating and making $10 a day might be your limit because files run out. One place I recommend is GoTranscript. They offer a shit-ton of files but the pay is bad. It's 20 cents per audio minute transcribed, so at best you'll be making $1 every 30 minutes, or $2 an hour with them.
The other place is TranscribeMe. They have better pay. 50 cents per 1:30 minute file. With them, you make $1 every 10 minutes, so if you're lucky to catch a nice string of clean audio files, you can make $6 an hour. For westerners that's below min. wage, but for us, especially the province, it's p. good actually.

I started mid-June. I kept an excel table to keep track. I averaged $3 an hour because I was working at both places at the same time, and I only spent a couple hours max per day, for those 2 weeks, skipping some days. I only made $60. I had committed 20 hours or so, to transcribe 4 hours' worth of audio, so yeah, that puts it at about $3/hr.
Right now I'm trying to hustle and make at least $15 a day. My speed has increased a little, and I can now earn that in 4-5 hours, so that's good, but I'm factoring in the time it takes me to download and convert the files, then replay the audio file to check for mistakes, add tags and labels and all that shit, which eats up at least 10 more minutes. Bad part is I gotta do this all 30 days of the month, and finding SUITABLE files that have clean audio and pay well enough to keep up with the $15/day mark is really difficult. I might consider applying for a full-time position with them for better pay and guaranteed files because I really like doing it and my writing speed borders 130 WPM.
$450/mo is actually a pretty decent salary for the city I live in, and it's money that people work for 8-9 hours a day. Factor in the time it takes them to go to work and come back, that's 10 hours a day for the same money I make in 5. I'm in my own place, so all I pay is just the bills. It's a pretty sweet deal for me.

Great question. A lot of times they need the text files for court. Also, it takes less time to skim through a page and see key words in a text, than it is to have to listen to a 10-minute audio file. I honestly don't know what people do with their files and I don't care so long as I get paid.

It's because 1st worlders wouldn't work for $3/hour. Also, transcription has a heavily-pyramidal hierarchical structure. Most transcribers are 2nd or 3rd worlders. They do the "grunt" work. Then the text file goes through someone more experienced called a QA (Quality Assurance). They make sure all the grammar and stuff is good, and that you haven't made more than 20-30 percent mistakes. Then the file goes through one final Reviewer, and THEN it lands into the client's hands.

The founder of TranscribeMe (I think he's Russian) said that it's extremely difficult, even with today's technology, to get an accurate transcription of what people say. Mostly because audio files are of very shitty quality. I've tried cleaning up background noise with Adobe Audition CC, but it's only so much it can do.
Just check out the YouTube auto-transcription option. It's terrible. You gotta have a guy with a super-clear accent speak at 1 word per 2 seconds for it to transcribe accurately.

I was super-hyped for Prolific Academic too, and I made 50 GBP with them very quickly, but then they dried out and haven't given me any surveys in months.
I'm afraid the same might happen to the transcription service industry. There's just too much incentive for normies to bring in their friends to transcribe and they, collectively, eat up all the work, piece by piece.

Yes, some transcribes even buy foot-pedals to help them do their transcriptions faster. I say this - there is NO way for you to transcribe a file without going through the same sentence at least twice. Some people chew their words so much that you'll have to slow down the speed to 0.7x to keep track with them. That's why I said that initially, it might take you anywhere from 7 to 14 minutes to transcribe 1 minute of audio.
That includes going over the text, or a specific sentence, several times, proof-reading, going over it one more time to fill in the gaps, etc.
You WILL have to hear shit over and over again, but it's not as frustrating as you might think. The bitch is when the QA reviews your stuff. They might not agree with the way you hear things. You might be absolutely certain that the guy says "warm air masses" and the context is CLIMATE, but the QA will write "warmer asses". It'll count as a correction, it'll increase your corrected percentage and there's nothing you can do about it but hope that the 3rd guy, the Reviewer, will tell the QA he's wrong.

I think both have tests that you have to pass, so make sure you read their guidelines first. It only takes 5 minutes. Make sure you consult with the guidelines for the first week. Each place has its specific rules.
For example, gotranscript penalize starting sentences with "And, But, Because", whereas TranscribeMe don't.

GoTranscript are more chill. They have a 5-point rating system and aren't as strict. TranscribeMe are more OCD about it. They have a percentage system where, after you submit your work and it gets corrected, you can see your work and that of the QA side-by-side, see exactly what they corrected and learn from it.
GoTranscript however, requires more work. They want you to label each speaker and mark each inaudible / unintelligible word / section with [inaudible 00:01:00] and [unintelligible 00:02:00] tags, etc.
TranscribeMe are better in this aspect, they just want you to mark what you don't understand with [?] or a suggestion enclosed in the tag, e.g. if you think you heard Jameson, you write [Jameson?], but it still counts as a correction if the QA touches it, albeit a very insignificant one.
For a 1:30 file, you could have 10-20 punctuation errors and only be penalized 5-7 percent or so. I have texts that are swiss-cheeze'd with red highlighter that are only 15 percent corrected, which is still pretty decent.
You wanna avoid anything over 25 percent.
