I think you have a warped idea of what westerners want from anime and manga. A lot of us read it specifically because it's cute but doesn't (completely) insult our intelligence at the same time. Stuff like that hasn't really existed in western societies as far as visual mediums are concerned since like the 1950s up until recently.
Being into that sort of tryhard macho bullshit in the west nowadays is generally seen as trying to compensate for one's own perceived inadequacies as a male. Or as another anon said, it's homo bait.
