Congress used to govern DC directly, until not too long ago when they set up a city government for it. I get the "taxation without representation" argument, but if that's your issue, why not just merge most of DC with Maryland and the southeastern part with Virginia? If you really need there to be an independent federal district, just make it the National Mall and its immediate surroundings, because no one lives there except the President.

Yeah but back then the states functioned much more like independent countries united under one banner. Each state was out in a cutthroat competition to be the top state in the union. Giving it to another state would be basically admitting you win. Putting DC where it was was basically just a huge compromise between the two big power players back then, Pennsylvania and Virginia. You put it next to Virginia, out of former Virginia territory, that's sort of a win for Virginia right? But it's also relatively near Pennsylvania and it doesn't get to be part of a southern state, so victory for you too.
It wasn't made a state because that would have been seen as dumb and pointless then, they were trying to prevent competition between states, not add another state to the fire. Now states don't act so much like countries, no other state is going to complain if DC is made a state or at least none I can imagine. It's not really going to upset any power balances, and only limits federal power a bit.

The amount of detail and exposition makes it look tacky, because I always imagine the fat-shirts and bikinis and pickup trucks, and it loses some value by saturation.
Americans have a unique relationship with their flag. Most other countries have it as something formal, almost as a trophy for their hard-fought country or an original family, but America doesn't have that long a history to do it, and it already started as a democracy right out of the bat, so it means something different to you.
Because you guys are all immigrants from different places, you have nothing in common except for the American dream, and the flag. So your flag means more unity than heritage, and it's pretty unique in that regard, so I wouldn't advocate for changing it (besides the number of stars, of course), even though I don't find it the best looking.
