That whole union thing was a fuck-up on Sweden's part, though. The terms of the union were such that nobody was happy with them. Norway got a lot of autonomy, but it got less than full autonomy, which of course is what the Norwegians had wanted all along. Sweden had to promise to pretty much let Norway run itself with relatively few obligations to the crown, which is less what the Swedes would have wanted.
And it's all because the moronically optimistic Bernadotte wanted to be king of France after Napoleon was deposed.
