I've been considering moving to Iceland for a time now, either for a few years or permanently if I'm able to ground myself. What I'd like is some input, advice, and info from natives and foreigners who have immigrated to Iceland. What is the mainstream consensus on foreigners/Americans, what are the most common political perspectives? How is the job market and how much income does one need to live comfortably? How is the internet? Any information on the different cities and towns is appreciated, as is any experiences (especially with the government healthcare) and advice you're able to provide. I've visited Iceland twice and stayed for about two weeks each time (once in Winter and once in Autumn), and plan on doing so again for a longer period of time before I start to more seriously consider relocating.

Things to note:
>I adore cold weather and snow, and have lived in a climate somewhat similar to that of Iceland my entire life
>Limited daylight during the Winter is a pro for me for various reasons I won't get into, just know I do enjoy it
>I do not currently speak much Icelandic, but am more than willing to learn and have been teaching it to myself on and off for a couple of years via online instruction
>If necessary I can net roughly $2000 a month freelancing Video Editing, Photo Manipulation, and Graphic Design online, if I do so full-time.
>I have no issue being alone

Thanks

I've heard it's nigh impossible to get Icelandic citizenship without marrying an Icelandic citizen.

You'll always be looked down at for being one, even if it's not obvious. It doesnt matter how hard you integration, you will never ever be Icelandic, and neither will your kids.
Guess's that's what you get when you're colonized for 800 years.

It's going to be a culture shock. There's very few nuclear families in Iceland. They have a liberal model where single mothers have children and let the town raise them.

really?
>>61568689
It's a boring place with weird weather and weird sun-hours. Wouldn't live there. I guess internet and such are fine there. Their drinking water is great

t. travelled there

That sounds lit af desu.

I'd imagine that their communities are a lot less dysfunctional.

Half-Icelander here.

Foreigners? Yeah there are plenty there these days. It's no longer 100% pure Icelanders in the country now - I've started to see non-white kids speaking Icelandic etc. Not a problem.

Job market/income: never stayed for more than 2 months so I don't really know. Of the people I'm acquainted with, none of them seem to complain about getting jobs or living on the money they have - although these are Icelanders we're talking about, who are very motivated and hardworking people. Even my drug addict cousin can get a job (lives with his parents tho). Visas might be tricky.

kek internet is fine. It's not fucking Botswana

Cities? Plural? Reykjavik has a pop of max 20000. Akureyri (up north) is the next biggest with a few tens of thousands. Anywhere outside of Reykjavik is going to be pretty boring for an American, ngl. But the good thing is that even the tiniest bumfuck town has really amazing facilities so it doesn't seem like too much of a shithole. And you can get around the country within relatively little time - again, especially compared to America. All the towns I've been to are pretty neat in their own way 2bh.

Look, don't even try learning Icelandic. I barely speak the language anyway. It's a fucking joke how complicated it is. I can guarantee that you will never master all the declensions. Every single person including old grannies in rural farms speaks English anyway. It's not worth the effort.

Just stay in America, Niggerspic.
>>
>>61569978
Having said that if you do master the language the natives will be so impressed
>>
>>61568689
Iceland hasn't had the best economy in recent years. There are still native Icelanders who can't find jobs. I doubt that they'd appreciate the addition of foreign competition.

Iceland's liberal policies are very dysfunctional. People from single family homes have higher rates of mental illness but they use anti-depressants from going completely crazy.

There's so many other factors you're not taking into account.
>>

LOL

Let me start by saying Iceland has a very hostile climate; vitamin D deficiency is high, education is fucked, the language is impossible to learn. Almost half of the adult population is on antidepressants. If you're wondering what its like just watch Father Ted and imagine it being colder.

You're not the first to want to move there- it's a beautiful and cohesive place. The truth is, foreigners and natives have such different values they'll never be able to live happily amongst each other. Iceland is definitely beautiful but it's also desolate and spread out. Don't go if you live alone- winters are depressing, and the sights get old quickly.

#1 rule: be respectful. If you act up you'll be ostracized. Communities are tight and very demanding. It's a weird place and you'll end up having to ignore men and women making questionable choices (drugs, single mothers, etc.) Just accept that they're naturally insane and enjoy it while it's fun.

>I adore cold weather and snow, and have lived in a climate somewhat similar to that of Iceland my entire life
So you like the climate. Why move to Iceland if you can get it where you live right now?

>Limited daylight during the Winter is a pro for me for various reasons I won't get into, just know I do enjoy it
You can get limited daylight by closing your curtains. What you find more enjoyable to do outside in darkness is something you really should elaborate on because it makes 0 sense.

>I do not currently speak much Icelandic, but am more than willing to learn and have been teaching it to myself on and off for a couple of years via online instruction
Yeah sure. Icelanders speak English well, so I'd be willing to bet you'll get lazy and stop studying. Especially considering you've already been doing it for a couple of years and still can't speak much of Icelandic.

>If necessary I can net roughly $2000 a month freelancing Video Editing, Photo Manipulation, and Graphic Design online, if I do so full-time.
A job you can do where you live. Not a position you were offered in Iceland or something.

>I have no issue being alone
How is this a thing to note? You can be alone pretty much everywhere.

Also,
>(especially with the government healthcare)
I smell a dirty fucking NEET.

What are the real reasons you want to move? Feel like it would "change" your life somehow? Make you less miserable?
>>
>>61568689

lmfao
made more than this in my minimum wage job as teen

>>
>>61568689
Ok OP just accept that you are never gonna move to iceland and you are never gonna be Icelandic.
>$2000 a month
laughably small
I'm 18 and work in a off road modification shop and I get $3500 a month
Nobody wants to speak Icelandic to somebody that constantly makes grammatical errors and pronounces things like a retard it's just to painful.
>I adore cold weather and snow, and have lived in a climate somewhat similar to that of Iceland my entire life
Where?
>What is the mainstream consensus on foreigners/Americans
More gonne answer this for any random lurkers but I am a national socialist(nazi) in public and nobody I know cares that much.
A guy that praised Hitler once in a news comments section often gets 10+ likes. A polish girl in my school (grunnskóli) had all of her fingers on one hand crushed because she was polish.
