Is it really a waste of time learning languages other than English? I've wanted to learn Russian for God knows how long now, but whenever I start reading the material I feel like I'm wasting time I could be doing something more productive. Not only that but it's a language that I won't use much outside of the Internet, I'm not moving to Russia or anything like that.

On the other hand, I constantly feel like I'm just looking for excuses to remain in my comfort zone as a bilingual, avoiding the huge effort it takes to learn another language.

Help.

You have to learn Ancient Greek so you can brag you can read Homer on the original.

I know a guy who learned Latin only to brag about shit like that, I don't want to be that guy.
>>
if you enjoy doing it just do it

Learn Russian, and you'll appreciate Dostoyesvky in its original language

Lmao what a pleb I'm learning Arabic to read the Quran without any translation
>>

That's why I'm so conflicted, I do enjoy it but I can't shake the feeling that it's also a waste of time.

like shitposting on a mongolian board for cave paintings isn't a huge waste of time
>>
>>61549746
At least I don't get conflicted about that one, I've been trying to come here as little as possible, but I'll admit it's a bit hard. This place is like hard drugs.

This is a pretty cool thing to do unironically
>>

Stop leaning Russian. It's difficult and useless.

How far are you?

You're probably flagged on some list or database now.

just learn enough to break the language barrier and then you'll have a hobby for the rest of your life

at some point foreign languages just *click* in your mind and all that's left is deepening your knowledge, absorbing cultural context and so on
>>

I'm aware, I remember when that happened to me for English. It's a good feeling.

I'll keep going with that in mind. Thanks Polebro.

USA YES

How? I tried duolingo, but no lession notes on phone
>>
>>61552464
Use the web version in your phone's browser, it's optimized for phones and it has the notes.

Also I don't recommend Duolingo as the only resource (I tried that, so I'm speaking from firsthand experience), read something that covers more grammar on the side. The New Penguin Russian Course is a good one.

Most of Russia is empty space

Yes. It's not a worthwhile way to spend time, if you’re looking at it like a skill and a job. People who learn languages enjoy the process, and when the process is mostly over, they watch cartoons and movies and browse imageboards using the language, so it's worthwhile for them.
>>
>>61552780
I do enjoy the process, but I feel a certain guilt, like when you're doing something you enjoy but you know it's a waste of time
like watching anime
The best way to learn a languages - is to live in the country.
>>
>>61552912
That's what I feel when I do programming. Interesting but so worthless.
>>

groundbreaking
>>
>>61552976
I program casually but I don't feel that. What do you program for? Is it a hobby or a job?
>>
>>61549323
It's only a waste of time to learn a language other than English only if your not going to use it. You shouldn't learn Russian if you're not going to go to Russia or speak Russian with other people
>>
>>61552685
I'm aware. It's still one of the most commonly spoken languages
>>
>>61552976
move to America, even idiots who barely know htlm and css can find jobs here. What languages do you know though? I'd call it far from useless as it's literally my job.
>>
>>61549323
You've got to have a reason to learn a language.

1) Move to the country
2) Watch media in this language
3) Meet hot girls who also speak the language
4) Read classic literature
5) Find a job who involves the language
6) Pray in this language
7) Have access to specialised knowledge in this language

...are good reasons. But if you don't have these motivations, it's a waste of time.
