Who proud monolingual here?

I only speak English; but don't have any strong feelings one way or the other on the subject.

Jealous of polylinguists 2bh. Especially since most Americans can't even speak one language correctly. I feel like I need to compensate for that.

Pourquoi les anglos sont fiers de ne parler que anglais mais deviennent maloculs dès qu'un français ne parle quand français ?

Same here. Unfortunately, I'm mostly interested in meme languages instead of anything useful

I, too, am a monoglot but I can be persuaded to learn a second language with economic or sexual incentives.

Why be jealous of people that had to take time out of their lives to learn a real language such as English and not their native meme one?

i was fluent by the age of 13+- and i spent no time actively learning it. When you are kid its really easy to pick up 2 or 3 languages at the same time.

Jesus Christ dude, how the fuck did you manage that? Is it easier since you don't have to worry about pronunciation?
Also, is Latin worth the effort? What I've seen looks gorgeous and it has a pretty good library of stuff to read. Not to mention the advantage you get for Romance languages

Latin pronunciation is pretty much known, but it is written phonetically.

Ah, thanks. I've heard Latin spoken and sung before but I wasn't sure if it was accurate or if they were just making up shit to make it sound as appealing as possible
And damn man. I hope I can end up a polygot of that magnitude by the time I'm that old. Currently I just speak German with a fast-fading understanding of Japanese and basic French.
Maybe Latin could be a fun project. I think I recall the library having some books on it

Latin is worth the effort, if you wish to learn or improve existing knowledge of a Romance language. Though a shortcut can be made there. The crucial part is the vocabulary with classical Latin. The grammar of modern Romance languages looks much like Vulgar Latin one. All of them drew grammar from Vulgar Latin, so even knowing the Vulgar one is a big bonus n grasping Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Romanian (in that order)

Jusg to give you an example: Italian and Romanian drew their plural suffixes from the Vulgar Latin nominative (-i) while Spanish and Portuguese for example, drew from its accusative (-os)
Or the way the "il/le/o/ul" (male definite article came to be from the Vulgar Latin pronouns actually being classical Latin pronouns ille/Ila/illud)
And so on...

Just don't be a deadbeat like me and stop halfway. Don't start if you can't reach a satisfying level. I. All sincerity...
I can read and understand all Romance languages, but I ca only put together half assed Spanish sentences... it's crippling. Same for Greek. Understand it, and it looks like an eye balm as opposed to ancient Greek, but I can produce dog shit sentences....some mehanism is stuck in my head
>>
>>61496092
I was mostly looking at Latin for Latin's sake, the romance language understanding is just a bonus.
But it is enticing to be able to get a shortcut through French and Spanish vocabulary. Learning something useful while still having fun with my dead language meme bullshit
>>
>>61496045
I was talking to a local librarian about French immersion a couple days ago. She said the older style, like we would have taken, has been completely discredited and basically everything concerning the way it was taught is now considered counterproductive. Apparently the old way gave rise to Frenglish/Françanglais because it did nothing to change the way students thought in language. So most can read French/English fairly well, write it poorly, understand it barely, and speak it pretty much not at all outside a few common words and phrases.

In the last couple few years they have completely revised the teaching methods so that students automatically learn to start "thinking" in either language rather than stuggling to translate it in their heads as they go.
>>
>>61496261
This is pretty interesting pham. What kind of new teaching methods do they now use?
>>
>>61496198
I had a science professor in college that convinced me to take a Latin course. Said she thought anyone planning to take any life science or medical major would greatly benefit from it. She was right, it also helped with my English and the etymology was kind of fun.
>>
>>61496261
How do the two compare? It sounds interesting, the way I was taught also tried to eliminate the internal translation thing
>>61496304
Etymology is fun and I can definitely understand where it'd make science easier. it sounds like a fun project to take on desu
>>
>>61496301
She didn't say and I haven't looked into it yet, but she did say that all in text or verbal translations are gone. They recommend students not use them because it teaches you to think through translation. Now they do a series of numbered books, increasingly advanced, entirely in French, with pictures within the story and natrative (rather than just a pictute of a cat next to caption le chat) that correspond and help kids to start seeing and thinking in French. I plan on looking into it some more
>>
I don't mind monolinguals, but why would you be proud of it? It's like being that kid with autism who can only focus on one very narrow specific topic, only it's self-imposed. Why would you purposefully be close-minded to the idea of learning other languages, even if you don't ever learn one?

That dude's argument was pretty week, but I'd say learning a language isn't very useful, even in comparison to learning an instrument, unless of course you live or frequently visit areas where many people speak that language.

It can be interesting, but it's too tedious and difficult to be a purely recreational hobby the way learning guitar and bicycling are to many people.

It's fun though. Etymology is neat, you can meet new people and make new friends, and you can read a broader array of books without relying on a translator
Some of them are useful too

The sheer volume and rate of the ideas being exchanged online in English makes for far less autistic and more advanced banter, I'd wager. Wishing I knew another language fluently to say for sure though lol.

As for movies and literature, the volume of things produced means there will be a lot more things worth consuming. For example, even if only 5% of English language films are excellent and truly worth watching, and 20% of French language films are as good as those 5%, that leaves far, far more excellent English language films. The same would apply to all media.

This is all speculation. I'm just going to assume that the difficulty of learning French would outweigh whatever enjoyment I'd get from consuming French language media.

The quantitative approach is wrong IMO.

First, because what constitutes "worth" or "quality" can differ widely in another language. That's pretty much the whole challenge of discovering new cultures: you realise your tastes aren't universal, and your judgement adapts to the new culture.

Second, because the quality gets lower when the volume gets higher. It's true for art, culture, ideas, anything.

Think about a normie invasion of 4chan: millions of moms and dads from Facebook spamming their normie-tier humour here. The quality of 4chan would go downhill, as the interesting content would be stifled amidst oceans of bland stuff.

It's the same thing with culture. Low volume can stem from an interesting insularity, and from high standards. But high volume means normies are dumbing down the whole thing.

(Most of the French web is quite boring desu, but I've seen things on the French Twitter, often posted by immigrants, that left me in awe. No equivalent in English. Also, some French blogs are amazing and unthinkable in English. And specialised forums can go deeper than the English ones, because the community is tighter, and less trying to show off.)
