it's the old trickle down effect, while the world is doing more and more business and become more interconnected the rise in cost is faster than the the accumulation of wealth, so even if there is more going on people could afford less than before

There's a huge, enormous difference between Northern and Southern Italy.
The North is actually richer than Germany.
The South is poorer than Greece, actually poorer than Mauritania.
There's a gross, incredible gap in occupation level and average wage. Not in education; it's really a "cultural" thing. Many Southerners migrate to the North and they blend in well. Still this gap is a bargain too difficult to carry. That's also why many Northerner want to secede. The South can't be helped if they don't start helping themselves.
