There was never a "Persia". Iran has been called Iran by Iranians for millennia. The word "Iran" means "Land of the Aryans", and for thousands of years this term was used to refer to the land the Iranian/Aryan tribes inhabited such as the Medians, Persians, etc. Persian is just the language that became predominant in the nation after Cyrus the Great's unification of the Persian and Median peoples to create the great Iranian empire which went on to rule over 40% of mankind under one Shah during the Achaemenid Empire.
The illiterate Greeks called this empire "Persia" because they were clueless and that somehow caught on in the West for many centuries to come. In the early 20th century the Shah of Iran, Reza Shah, kindly asked the Western world along with the international organizations that were created by them to refer to the country as its real name, "Iran".
Calling Iran "Persia" is the equivalent of calling The Netherlands "Holland", and unfortunately the majority of foreigners and even a considerable number of Iranians mistakenly believe that somehow "Persia" is the unislamic term for the country or that it relates to the past when the country was a monarchy.
