Only because muh heritage came from "Prussia" and I've been to lazy to look through the family records at grandma's house to figure out if they lived in a province in modern Germany or the part of Prussia that got ruined by Poland.
I quite liked my visit to Rheinland-Pfalz.
NRW is nice too if you avoid the Ruhr, Düsseldorf and Aachen were great..

I thought they spoke some weird dutch-like dialect? Where does hochdeutsch actually come from? I always thought that since prussia was the dominant german power in the formation of germany, its dialect was standardized and became hochdeutsch. But looking at maps seems to tell me that the southern dialects are closer to hochdeutsch than northern ones, and that the closest is around saxony.

Northern Germany spoke something called "Plattdeutsch" and the south spoke something called "Hochdeutsch". The modern Standard German is a mix of the high german dialects from the middle of Germany (see Luther's original Bible translation) with the pronunciation of Lower Saxony's dialect.

The pronounciation of the official German language is the LowerSaxon pronounciation. But the languages "content" is Southern German.
It's an artifiscial language invented for administrative pourposes of Prussia. So all local administrations could recieve orders and report back in the same language.
