The EU is not going to blow up m8. Germany does have an interesting manufacturing culture (it's almost like large scale cottage industry, your guys in the South often just stick a factory next to a village. Our industrial centres tend to sprawl a lot more and be next to large cities. We do have some actual small scale cottage industry stuff too, but there's nothing quite like your parochial factories).
I think a really big difference that's often overlooked, here the idea of having like a little bakery or grocer is almost ridiculous. You guys have loads of these little mom and pop type stores that also have mom and pop type little suppliers. Here it's all large box stores (like tesco and sainsbury's, and even to some degree McDonald's) that have large suppliers and cater to many many people. The benefit we get is extreme consistency, p much you will always get the same kind of stuff in the same kind of places in these stores, you really don't get that so much in Germany. We get much more straightforward supply chains, the massive chain store only does business with the massive food supplier and so on. Your style of doing things is considered impractical. And it also wouldn't work, I don't know how many small cafés and restaurants I've known have closed down because English people will just go to the McDonald's instead even if you get better and cheaper food elsewhere.
