Being the narcissists they are they considered themselves the center of the world, and that's why the middle east is just east of greece. It would've been in the east if we had been settled by the Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Dutch. They were sailing southeast from South-East Asia or east from Africa, and found Australia to be a desert wasteland.
But the Brits discovered Australia by sailing west, from the Americas, to New Zealand, then to Australia, and found Australia to actually be quite nice.
