>Southern Europeans stop working in the middle of the day and go to sleep for a couple of hours
>later they complain they aren't as rich as the rest of Europe

Why do you guys do this? inb4 'muh heat', they had invented air conditioning like 50 years ago. You all know damned well each year you're going to have serious issues with the temperature, so why not invest money in air conditioners everywhere?
You don't hear Nordics complain about the snow and freeze, because they had rubbed two braincells together and stocked up on shit decades beforehand, so they are well prepared.

As much as I hate lazy assholes who blame everything on others, I hate German slanderers who would brand a whole country "lazy" as propaganda despite stats showing otherwise even more. I'm not denying there are Greeks who are lazy or blame others for their troubles, but ignoring all the evidence isn't a good argument.

The reason Greece is poor and will be for the foreseeable future is because it doesn't produce or export ANYTHING of note. Its industry has been strained since WW2 when it was wholesale destroyed and a bunch of other internal conflicts after that. When your industry isn't producing anything and tourism is your best source of income, you know your country is failing. That's not the people's fault.

This is something that baffled my mind when I went to Spain. Everyone just stopped working and went home. It's fucking bizarre.
>>
>>61261884
>The reason Greece is poor and will be for the foreseeable future is because it doesn't produce or export ANYTHING of note.
Absolutely agreed. However you don't think that this might be the result of low productivity?
Honestly think about it: if all of Greece actually made the longest hours in Europe and worked as hard as a German, wouldn't they at least have a comparable economy? With so many hard and long working people and access to Europe you should have some sort of production economy going for yourself after a while.
>>
It's really annoying. I studied in Spain last year and the majoirity of shops would close between 4-8 or so. I used to walk into a restaurant and sit down just to be told the kitchen wasn't open until 8:30 or 9 pm.

>>
>>61261999
I think that's something cultural as well. Mediteranian countries have dinner served VERY late, well after 9 is normal I think.
>>
Op, you didn't actually believe that "documentary" from the fatass american right?
>>
>>61260884
Mediterranean work ethic is best.

Work is good, but not when it is amoral and alienating office work.
>>
>>61262061
Northern italy here, old people eat between 6 30/7 30 while normal people between 7 30 8 30. Eating after 9 pm is not normal, but not that strange either i guess.
>>
>>61261955
No. Think it like this: 1 tractor works equally as 10 men. 8 hours becomes easily more efficent than 80 hours. Also they spend too much.
>>
>>61262061
it's something that only spanish do tho
>>
>>61262188
>Northern italy
I think you belong together with France, I was more referring to Spain, Greece and southern-Italy.
You have to understand though that in the Netherlands it's not uncommon to have dinner at 17:30, or even 17:00 for some hopeless cases.
>>
>>61262061
I lived with a Spanish family and we'd usually eat around 9:30-10. It definitely is cultural, but regardless, I'm sure some money is lost by being closed for 5 or 6 hours in the middle of the day.
>>
>>61262309
I don't see the point of eating dinner so late. I don't want to start memeing but don't they have work the next day? And aren't they hungry after a day of work?
>>
>>61260884
Southern Europe knows nothing about heat. Come to Arizona or the deep south.
>>
>>61261955

I believe it's more complicated than that. The data might be skewed, but the question to ask is whether that would make a difference. Even if they are the hardest working people in Europe, the country has no direction. The governments are corrupt as fuck, and even if they wanted to do something, the austerity measures make sure the economy will never take a breath again. And now they're out of choices when it comes to politics. Nothing they can do.

Point is, when the industry is nonexistent, the productivity of the people, whether the highest or lowest in Europe, does not go towards contributing to the economy. When Germans have functioning industry that is highly automated, the efforts of the people are not wasted. But, even if the Greeks have to work twice as much to get the same end result, they don't produce anything... they just work to make ends meet, to survive, to sort through the bureaucracy. There's no end goal to their work. That's what it means to have a dead industry, which is also the reason for the worker and brain drain going on at the moment from Greece to other countries. Austerity kills any hope of the people's work contributing to anything.

Lunches tended to be huge, and usually eaten around 3-3:30, so the wait between meal times wasn't drastic, but I can't speak for all families. I lived with a retired couple, so they'd stay up as late as they wanted.

>>61262425
You make good points and I'm sorry not to adress all of them but you miss my point.

If the Greeks are the hardest working people, how is it ever possible they don't produce anything? What do they work so hard on?
That was my point. You can't claim to work the longest hours and at the same time have 90% of your economy rely on tourism and importing everything.

What's the point of working just for the sake of working?

Southern Europeans work, earn some money, buy some comfy as fuck fluffy bed and take a siesta or fuck norcucks's wives on it (who love spending their holidays in southern europe for some reason)

That's life, not working non-stop like autistic ants and accumulating money you end up not enjoying anyway and commiting suicide at the age of 40 because of stress.
>>
>>61262660
It has to do with the Euro which is kept high by countries like Germany and the Netherlands. This makes it very hard to Greece to export since they cannot just devaluate their currency.
Basically Greece should've never been admitted to the Euro since they could not compete with other Euro countries, but are kept tied to our high value currency.

Also obviously huge structural problems, political instability, etc.

>>
>>61262535
Well, lots of working hours =/= good production or good industry, I mean, take a look at the top hardest working countries in the world. Not all of them are exactly production powerhouses. I can't pinpoint exactly what the people work on since I'm not from Greece.

If you ask me, the problem currently lies in austerity and austerity only. Even if the people are working as hard as possible, they're just working to pay debts back, while borrowing more and more, unable to ever pay the whole debt. As such, payback deadlines means that the industry will never jumpstart to begin with, since they don't have the time or money to do it. In other words, the reason I personally don't doubt that Greeks are the hardest workers is because I know it wouldn't matter to their production in the end. The deck right now is stacked against them, and was stacked against them from back when they joined the EU (partly the fault of their own corrupt officials too).
>>

So my solution to bring back the drachma was not a meme solution after all?
>>
>>61260884

>>
>>61262836
hello Gennaro
>>
>>61262873
>expecting people on 4chan to possess basic problem solving skills
>>
>>61262872
No. Short term would have been a drama, just like it is now, but at least the Drachma could adjust to the Euro and other currencies and be an equal representation of the Greek economy.

Imagine if the Euro would have been the currency of only Greece. It might have been worth $0.10, instead of the current $1.11. But now you add Germany, Netherlands, France etc to the Euro and the same currency that represents the Greek economy is worth 1000% more. So basically the richer Euro countries make it so that Greece their currency is completely out of touch with their economy.
>>
>>61262873
>>61262928
I refuse to believe the majority of their countries show up at work at 8, then work on till 14:00, go home and return at 18:00 so they can work for 3 more hours.
>>
>>61262872
Having talked to lots of Greeks, the consensus is that the drachma is a much better long-term solution compared to austerity. Thing is... are you willing to sacrifice your kids and this whole generation's future to have a chance 20 years down the line? Yeah... that's the choice Greeks had to make. It's not easy, dooming an entire generation to poverty, I can't blame them. Things were going to be BAD if they went bankrupt outside the EU.
>>
>>61262971
Sorry, but please explain to a layman how having a more valuable currency would hurt their economy?
(Sorry, I am awful with economics)
>>
>>61263013

Actual closing hours are usually 2pm-4pm, in most local owned shops. They usually just have a new wave of staff when they reopen. This is effectively their lunch break also.
>>
>>61263065
Because the higher value of your currency is created by the higher productivity.
Imagine a German company has to pay for 3 hours of salary for 1 product, but the Greek one has to pay 9 hours for the same product.
However since they both have the same currency the Greeks can either pay 1/3 hourly salary or never sell 1 product.
If the Drachma was back, the Greeks could make their currency worth 1/3 of a Euro and have their economy function better. As of now there is no reason to produce anything in Greece since the costs are the same while the production is lower(and location unfavourable.)
>>
>>61263065
but honestly it's just a simple principle: countries with different productivity need their own currency which they can balance out against each other.
This is why the Euro works out okayish for NL and GER but not for Greece.

Same happened with Argentina that tied their currency to the Dollar once.

Usually, stores here close between 14:00 and 17:00, not for the siesta but to let workers eat in their houses.
Restaurants and such doesn't serve meals at the evenings until 20:00, but you can have drinks and tapas anytime, they are not closed. By the way, in Spain you usually have dinner around 21:00~22:00h.
bTW, McDonalds and other fast-food-shitholes work 24h.
