As the article states, countries like France and Germany have enough 'unique' high quality export goods that the EU would be interested in even if they left. Britain has relatively little in the way of manufacturing, and most of that is foreign owned.

The thing is Britain manufactures nothing the EU doesn't already have solid alternatives to. I imagine that in the long run both France and Germany might profit from Britain's voluntary retreat from the Free Market.
