I'm preparing to move to Moscow in a year. I've got a couple of questions about my name.

1. My name is Джoнни (Johnny in cyrillic). What is your opinion about meeting someone with a western name? I will probably live there for the rest of my life.

2. Do you think I should change my name to Ивaн? If so, why? Give a good reason for/against.

3. What would the diminutive forms of Джoнни be, since it's a western name? Since the Russian equivalent name is Ивaн, I guess it would be Baня? Or would it be something else? I guess something like Johnushka, John'ka or some shit like that? How would it work?

>>

if you want to hang out with bydlo than you should change your name, otherwise Johnny is better.
>>
>>61176609
2. Do you think I should change my name to Ивaн?
No. Stay true to yourself no matter where you go. Peole will know you are foreigner anyway, there is no point in changing your name unless you are a spy. Plus Johnny already is a diminutive.

If I were you I would think about patronimic. Everyone has patronimic in Russia. What's your father's name?
>>

You should, basic health system is free here, they would fix your head

No. I have a stable internet income and with that I can live okay in Sweden but live like a king in Russia, and I absolutely loved it every time I've been to visit Moscow.

>>61177047
>if you want to hang out with bydlo than you should change your name, otherwise Johnny is better.
Hehe no I don't want to hang with street trash. Thanks for the honest reply. I like my name and would only change to Ivan if it was better.

>>61177061
>No. Stay true to yourself no matter where you go. Peole will know you are foreigner anyway, there is no point in changing your name unless you are a spy.
Wow, that made me laugh and is also great advice. True, people will know I am a foreigner anyway.

>Plus Johnny already is a diminutive.
Oh, I didn't realize that. Is it because of the soft "ni" word ending? That's surprising. Mind explaining?

>>61177061
>If I were you I would think about patronimic. Everyone has patronimic in Russia. What's your father's name?
That's a very good point. I don't have a patronymic but I definitely need one. My father's name is Hans:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_(name)
Which in turn is a short version of Johannes, which in turn is related to... oh shit... Ivan! :o

Ivanovich? ;) Heh, I guess that would be it?

There's no point trying to invent something weird like "Hansovich" (eww). So I think it'd be Ivanovich. Correct me if I am wrong.

I know that people call each other by first name + patronymic all the time in business/formal settings.

So I guess I should get used to hearing:
Джoнни Ивaнoвич

True, except I wasn't talking about just using a different name among a group of friends. I meant legally changing it as my one chance during the citizenship process. But I would only change it if necessary. Glad to hear Джoнни will be acceptable. ;) I mean, every Russian person knows about Джoнни Дeпп (Johnny Depp), so I assume they're kind of used to the name already and it won't be too weird.

That's true, which is why Moscow or St Petersburg is my choice. There's so much misery in the smaller cities. I like what I experienced in Moscow.

>>61177887
Haha, no, I understood that you called me stupid too for moving to Russia to get away from crazy muslims. But I don't think it's stupid. I like what I experienced in Moscow, and the fact that money buys a lot more in Russia than in Sweden. I love the language and the culture. We'll see if I break down and move out after 5 years. Then we can say you were right. ;) But Europe is becoming a muslim country and it's so fucking insane here now, I just want to leave. My money goes far in Russia, the women are beautiful, and I love the language (will start studying deeply starting next week).

Just double-checked... Yep... Swedish people are cucks as always. It is so easy to get my citizenship back if I need it. I just have to request it and they re-grant it immediately, no questions asked. It literally says on the government site: "If you have lost your Swedish citizenship as part of becoming a citizen of another country, you can reclaim your Swedish citizenship at any time."

But I do not want my future kids to grow up in Sweden when it's even more of an Islam hellhole than now.

I don't use different names among friends. I would never use my English name in my first language or the other way around. This applies to everyone. Strangers, friends, family, teachers, everyone. It's just the way I've always done it since I was a kid. It would feel wrong to do it differently. My legal name is actually in English but I'm thinking of changing it but continuing to use the English form while speaking English.

>>61179045
Never been to St Petersburg, but a friend of mine documented his trip a few years back, you can learn a lot from him: https://www.youtube.com/user/LateBlt2/videos (Go alllll the way back and start watching his videos about why he moved, and how he felt there, and you will experience a lot about St Petersburg). It's a beautiful city for sure.

I know a bit of Russian but I am starting immersion training next week (basically getting all my news in Russian, watching TV shows and movies entirely in Russian, and training every day, to expand my vocabulary). If you want to know more about learning languages fast, go to http://www.fluentin3months.com/forum/ (3 months is just a catchy title; it's a good site and they never claim it takes 3 months, but they DO claim that it never takes years, and they're right, it takes about a year if you are passionate and intelligent; don't let other people put their limitations on you and claim it takes years, if it does that then you're doing it wrong)
>>
>>61179091
>This seems correct but Джoнни Ивaнoвич is just cringeworthy. I'd go with Ивaн Ивaнoвич or Джoнни Хaнcoвич.

Oh, yeah you have a strong point; I shouldn't mix native and foreign names like that.

Ivan is fine but you know as well as I do that "Ivan Ivanovich" is the most common male name because there are so many Ivans. I don't want to do that.

Джoнни Хaнcoвич it is then! It doesn't sound so bad anymore now that I got used to it. Hansovich... There are even a few people in history with that patronymic, so it's not unheard of.
>>
Why not move to Central America like smarter people?
>>
>>61178968
Well, neither of my first two language are really "foreign" since I learned them both before starting school. But, yes, I use direct equivalents. I didn't really pick anything because this is just how I've done it my whole life. It would be really awkward for me to just settle on one name.

When it comes to speaking actual foreign languages that I learned later in life, I'm still confused on what to do. One foreign languages is close enough to my native language that there is really no need to translate my name, and the other foreign language I've only ever spoken with other English speakers at school, so I just use my English name just like them.
>>
>>61179507
Hah, I have a friend in Brazil so I could do that, but fuck no, central america is absolutely awful. It's like a barely civilized jungle full of fat latinas shitting out 15 kids that roam the favelas.

Okay I had a look:
https://yandex.com/search/?text=Хaнcoвич

Yeah, definitely no problem at all. There's lots of people with Хaнcoвич as patronymic due to migrants named Hans, heh. Thanks for the advice! It definitely makes more sense to keep both parts of the name western, and I don't think "Ivan Ivanovich" would be anything but laughable on me (it's the most stereotypical Russian name).

Джoнни Хaнcoвич

Interestingly, yandex translates Хaнcoвич as Jancovich. Would I pronounce it Johnny Jancovich? From the spelling I assumed It was pronounced Hansovich.

That's true, I like Novosibirsk, and if the shit affects the western part of Russia I will just move east.

>>
>>61182186
Thanks that is what I thought, not sure why Yandex insisted Хaнcoвич == Jancovich.

And about the name... people in this thread basically all thought I should keep the name Johnny to avoid being a laughable "spy trying to become too Russian", and I think people can handle the name Johnny these days, young Russians have seen a lot of Johnnys in the movie/music entertainment business.

So, I agree that I should translate the patronymic for Hans as Hansovich.

It helped to discover that some native Russians have immigrated fathers named Hans and are therefore named Хaнcoвич. So it's not totally weird.

Then my only question becomes:
Джoнни Хaнcoвич

How do you feel about that name? I can't tell if it's shit/too weird or if it's "a fine, foreign-sounding but normal name".

Trust me, if you knew Sweden you wouldn't want to live here either. It's a socialist hellhole with zombie-people with glazed-over eyes, without any passion except for bringing insisting that we bring Islam here. I will give you an example of Sweden's insanity:

The government recently paid 450 million kronor (about 55 million dollars) to RENT a luxuary boat for ONE YEAR, which has room for 1850 immigrants.

That all came out of taxpayer money.

You don't know what you're talking about. Sweden is SHIT. It's fucking INSANE. Think of the dumbest person you know, and then put them in power, and you get Sweden.

http://www.allehanda.se/angermanland/harnosand/flyktingfartyg-med-1-700-platser-kan-forlaggas-i-harnosands-hamn-inte-en-lamplig-placering

Sweden kicks out its elders from the retirement homes, to turn them into asylum homes instead. They reduce pensions and spend no energy trying to fix the housing crisis for the swedes themselves.

But they have no problem spending 55 million dollars renting a boat for one year, which has room for (correction) 1700 migrants.

And newspapers write about that boat as if it is a good thing. The newspapers are as fucking braindead as the rest of the Swedes. It is like a mass-psychosis cult.

So no, FUCK Sweden. FUCK it to hell. Luckily that is exactly what it is doing to itself, so all I have left to do is leave.

There are 55 "no go" zones in Sweden, which are so controlled by migrant crime that police don't dare to enter. The number of zones is growing. But all we ever hear in the news is "oh those poor migrants".

Rape is up 1500% but all we hear is "oh those poor migrants".

Sweden is a mass cult and I am leaving it.

Actual Russian people will feel that Johnny is already a familiar diminutive, so they'll tend to call you John for formality. It's also an American name so it would be weird explaining that you're in fact Swedish.

Ivan would be neat but it implies a degree of "Russian-ness" either inborn or learned. So I imagine it might become like a rite of passage to acquire the Russian name from the foreign John.

Джoнни Хaнcoвич is funny for two reasons, one is that patronymics are seldom thought of for foreign people, another is that patronymics are never used with nicknames and diminutives. So I'd suggest John instead of Johnny, as names by default are expected to be formal and nicknames are spoken.

>don't change your name, if locals have trouble with pronunciation(which I doubt) just tell em John(Джoн)

Thanks, I have been chilling away from this thread for a while and was happy to find yet another vote for "keep your name".

I realize that when I have kids, their patronymic will be Джoнoвич, and it turns out people exist with that patronymic too (just like my father's foreign name Hans which would make my patronymic Хaнcoвич).

You bring up something that someone else brought up too... My legal name is Johnny (Джoнни) which you recognize as a diminutive of John (Джoн).

So the question is... what do I do...

Is it okay to have Джoнни as my official name (meaning my driver's license/social ID card, etc)? I am fine with people calling me Джoн in formal settings. But I am less okay with being Джoн permanently, since at that point I may as well become Ivan.

Everyone has voted for "keep it" (as Джoнни), saying that it's better to be recognizable as a naturalized foreigner, than to pretend to be Russian. Well, my name *is* Johnny. So I hope to hear your opinion about this "diminutive trouble".

Keep in mind I might end up living in Russia my whole life (I love the language and culture), and having kids, etc. So I want to be well prepared about what my legal name should be.
>>
>>61185657
You think too drastically to keep using or is it fine?
>>
>>61185829
My father's name is Hans, which is from Johannes, which is Ivan in Russian (just like John/Johnny is Ivan).

I had the same question. I asked about Johnny Ivanovich vs Johnny Hansovich, and got a reply confirming my suspicion: Mixing Russian and foreign names looks silly. So the vote went to Johnny Hansovich.
>>
>>61185679
I think a diminutive in an official document would run contrary to Russian culture, especially as the patronymic would have to be Джoнниeвич or something. I say be Джoн, why not. People will call you Baня if they want, but a formal name is a formal name. A man has many names in Russia, all derived from his formal one.
>>
>>61185164
kek my dad hates Russians so it would be awkward to use a patronymic at all
>>
>>61185829
The most normal way is to take your father's name as is and form the patronymic. I kind of like Sean Ivanovich because of the feeling it creates, but your father's name wasn't actually Ivan despite what the patronymic now suggests.

So I said I like it, but not for the logical reasons.

Hmm, this is very fascinating and gives me something to think about...

I prefer the literal sound of Джoн more than Ивaн, that is for sure. I would feel weird with "Ivan" (it gives vibes of lower class), but with John I feel almost the same as Johnny.

Let me see...

Formal first name: John (Джoн)
My father's name: Hans
My patronymic: Hansovich (Хaнcoвич)
Most common nicknames among friends: Johnny (Джoнни), Vanya (Baня)
Kids patronymic: Джoнoвич (boy). What would the female equivalent be?

So let's look at it again...

Джoн Хaнcoвич

It's hard to get used to the idea for me. So I need help from any Russians who could taste that name and let me know how it feels to them.

>>
>>61186408
I see it as functional. Your patronymic directly reflects your father's name without alteration, so it is as expected to be.

Your first name is slightly changed to be perceived as formal, which you can see as adaptation to becoming a Russian resident.

After all though, it sounds obviously like a foreigner's name, but that is what you are, so it is true.

>Your first name is slightly changed to be perceived as formal, which you can see as adaptation to becoming a Russian resident.
To reiterate really on what I mean, I woudlnt' actually see it as change, but more like expansion to cover a new naming dynamic. So from old singular Johnny, you go to having several names both higher and lower on the social register (John being higher, and any number of nicknames possibly being lower). Pretty hard to explain it further without sounding autistic as fuck, but more or less that's how it is. Once you are actually in Moscow, you can observe how people are called by different variants of their name, e.g. when a man called Alexei is called Sasha or Lesha or Lekha by his peers. Ideally, you will be John/Johnny/other nicknames roughly along the same lines.
>>
>>61187924
Thank you so much. I am aware of the wonderful system of diminutive nicknames, and it's one of my favorite aspects of the Russian language.

You've helped me tremendously and I am completely okay with Dzhon as my name. In fact, I see that there's plenty of people in Russia and Ukraine with that first name. And there's plenty of people with Dzhonovich/Dzhonovna as their patronymic. So there's a precedent, which relaxes me a bit.

Thanks man.
