My dad nearly had similar.
Faecal vomiting is an indication of bowel obstruction. So in his case the staples closing his hernia popped and part of it kinked through like a hose. Not very common, obviously, but Medicine is never perfect - something a lot of laymen don't understand.
What happened there was that the hernia was probably too large for staples to be effective.
We believe it was for 12 hours with him and the symptoms were already present - intense pain, inability to eat and keep food down. Nowhere near the stage of OP pic.
In my dad's case we would have had reason to sue the hospital if we hadn't had him readmitted, because they shouldn't have used staples.
In OP case we'd need to know the nature of the accident (Daily Mail uses sensationalist headlines) - and whether it was an inherent risk of the surgery or directly due to poor practise. We'd also need to know why the fuuuuuuuuuck she didn't get herself readmitted earlier - because obviously you bear some responsibility for your own health.

I don't know about Australia but doctors are pretty much a mafia cartel here. They're untouchable.
Anyway, here's another medicine fail for everyone. My dad was operated on his leg because his veins were knotted or something and they had to install a spiral inside his leg but the doctors fucked up and put it in the wrong leg. From what we were told, they only discovered it at the end of the procedure.
