The differences between American regions, and on a lesser level, American states, are definitely as not as great as the differences between European countries, but are are most certainly significant.
You yuros who think that America is as culturally homogenous as the average European country on a regional level are very misinformed. You're talking out of your ass if you think Louisiana, Vermont, Utah, Michigan, and Arizona are identical with the exception of their landscapes. America is made up of immigrants. The culture of those immigrants home countries and how they mixed with the cultures of other immigrants is what made regional American cultures, since different groups immigrated to different areas of America over hundreds of years. The predominant industries in our regions play a big role as well, the cultures of Gulf Coast shirimping, Appalaichan coal mining, New England whaling and textile mills, Southern cotton farming, midwestern wheat farming and homestead culture, traditional Hawaiian culture, Silicon Valley hi-tech, Detroit auto manufacturing, the Los Angeles entertainment industry, and Northwestern timber all help create a local culture. Cold regions have a hockey culture. Beach regions have surfing culture. New England is puritain influenced, Louisiana=French, Upper Midwest=Scandanavian, Midwest=German, Texas=Spanish/German, South Florida=Cuban, New Jersey=Italian, Pennsylvania=German, Appalaichia= Scots-Irish, Boston=English/Irish, etc.
In Texas, Mexican immigrants found out about accordians from German immigrants and created mariachi music. Black slave culture in the South greatly imfluenced the culture of Southern whites and vice versa.

Different in what terms? They all share the common language and culture. People in all American states have similar mindset, mentality and beliefs. They all listen to the same music, watch the same films, do the same sports, work in the same companies, study in the same schools, go shopping to the same malls and eat the same turkey at Thanksgiving. The USA is in fact more homogenous than most of the European countris.
My, state, Florida, has distinct regions of its own. The Miami metro area is mostly Cuban,Caribbean, and South American and you are more likely to hear people speaking Spanish on the street unless you're in a tourist area, while the rest of the state, especially the rural areas and the North Florida cities of Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Gainesville, and Pensacola are culturally Southern. Hell, Tampa has a giant confederate flag that's visible from a major highway interchange. South Floridians have a Cuban accent while rural and North Floridians have either a strong southern accent or southern black accent depending on their race.
I'm from Maryland and my opinion is even every county in my state has as much cultural variation as European countries!

Jeez, just use your region. When I go abroad, people ask where I'm from and I say, "America", and usually they then ask what part, and I say "The South". Rather than saying Georgia, people more or less know for better or worse what and where the South is.
If you're from Pennsylvania, say you're from New England. Even if it isn't part of the region, it's the nearest and most familiar.
If you're from California, Texas, or New York (city) you can say you're from there because they're rather famous on their own.
If you're from Arkansas, pick etiher the South or Texas.
If you're from the Midwest, fuck you because no one knows or cares where your flyover trailer is.
