It was just a mutation of albinism. It spread as people found it beneficial and attractive for it's uniqueness.
This can be seen in parallel amongst albino Amerindians in Central America. The Kuna of Panama, and too a much lesser extent, Mayas in Mexico and Guatemala have high rates of albinism. Unlike many other variants of albinism, it mostly only affects hair color, turning it yellow blonde and only affects eye color 50% of the time, and only totally obliterates skin pigmentation 75% of the time. It's also considered attractive for it's uniqueness and it's spreading. 100 years ago 1 out of every 300 Kuna was born with this form of albinism, now 1 per 140 and projected to hit 1 per 90 soon. The interesting thing about this variant is that it only requires a single great grandparent have the gene for it to propagate and can lay dormant than spring up after several generations.
