If you're such a champion of liberty you shouldn't be in favor of that. Might I remind you that you can be labeled mentally ill as a means of silencing dissent... which was actually done in the Soviet Union. What if your people decided being liberal was a mental illness and you had the legal right to lock us all up. So much for America being a land of the free.
And even if a person is truly mentally ill, where do you draw the line between who is enough of a risk to be locked up and who isn't. How do you treat them? How long should they stay confined?
You can't just lock people up and throw away the key. The focus should be on rehabilitating people which is something Republicans have never had interest in. If some autist threatens to shoot up his school he shouldn't be locked in a mental institution for life but instead should be put into a secure facility and evaluated then should have regular meeting with a therapist to try to work out the life problems make strides at solving them. The families should be involved too.
We also need preventative mental health care. Normal people should see a therapist. It should be covered under every insurance plan. If you are mentally stable you see your therapist once or twice a year like getting a physical from a doctor. If the stress increases in your life you follow up and get additional treatment as required and potentially referral to a psychiatrist for meds if you need them.

That wouldn't have prevented Sandy Hook. In that case the autist did have a caretaker. His batshit crazy gun-nut of a mother who enabled that behavior and never even considered that guns might be having a negative influence on her AUTISTIC child. There's a case that regular therapy and medication could have likely prevented.
And consider the following. Most mass shootings aren't committed by severally mentally ill people like schizophrenics but rather by depressed normies, high function autists, and other people of a similar nature. They may have very good families but they are insecure about some failing in their life and take it out on other people. These people need help, not prison. We need to help them overcome and move on from what is dragging them down. They need a safe outlet to vent and and a third party who can provide objectivity and suggest ways to cope with problems, that's what therapy provides. As great as having a good family is families often aren't very objective about how to handle problems, especially when parents have very strong feelings on the problem or the solution to it that may conflict with the child's. In most cases you probably will not need any medication. You just need someone objective who you can talk to.
This isn't a one dimensional issue. The solution is a lot more complex than just institutionalizing all mentally ill people who have no caretaker.
