My mom and sister get really muh heritage about Ireland. My sister is an SJW so she really prefers to downplay our German heritage (partly because of our SS member great great uncle), she even went as far as spending a semester in Cork.
German Americans are in an odd position, you never hear about us and we don't often talk about our heritage, but we're the largest ethnic group and contributed the most to American culture.

We were a British colony, but most Americans have German ancestors. A lot of regional foods (i.e. Wisconsin Summer Sausage, Nebraskan Runza) are from German cuisine. Plus,a lot of the protestant denominations here (United Church of Christ, Lutheran churches) have German roots. The Anglican church has an extremely small presence.

I only have one surname for Hannover: Walter (could even be Walters). I'm not sure how to go about researching in that area. I know my ancestors from there were Lutheran, but the Lutheran church claims to not have my 2x-great-grandmother's baptismal record.

1840's is very far back imo, usually the trail ends around there. I was surprised I got back as far as 1719 but this is the furthest I got with any lineage, usually it goes cold around the early 1800s or earlier.

I'm obsessed with getting back as far as possible. The only way to do that it seems is to be related to nobility, which I am not from what I've found.
Regardless, considering the fact that you have a large amount of ancestors from the Kingdom of Hannover and I have a few, we're probably reasonably close cousins.

Consider the following:
I'm white, from a christian background, trying to learn the language, have read up a lot on PT history, started learning to cook PT food (bacalhau à bras is my favorite), I already had a really close PT friend before meeting her, and we agreed if we have kids we'll follow PT naming customs, take them on frequent trips to her parents, raise them with both languages, and try to get them dual citizenship.
I doubt you'd get that from an arab.

I know that exact feeling but sometimes it's just impossible to go any farther back. All the paper trails are gone. >>61058553
>Through my surname and ydna test I can trace my direct paternal ancestry to an individual from the 12 century
I'm very interested in doing this. What test did you take? Did you get a lot of matches? I'm guessing it was just one person you matched with that had information going back to the 1100s?

It's not the same as being only portuguese.
You'll raise children outside of Portugal that won't feel portuguese at all. And you can only ultimately be portuguese if you consider yourself one.
I understand that you are not a bad option, as you state why, and you are doing a really good effort, I appreciate that for real. However, she doesn't seem to care about her culture that much and your kids will tend to adopt the culture of the country where they'll be raised, the one that influence them stronger.
I also understand that Portugal is a mess right now and a lot of people wanna get out of the boat, just like your girlfriend. However, this is really sad for me, someone that wanna change the course of things and it's proud of Portugal's history.
I may be judging too quickly, but I would not see your girl as a fellow compatriot for whom I would fight. In fact, I would consider you more like a fellow portuguese that her.
That's all, chap.
>>61050951
that's an interesting history not going to lie.
>>61058588
I did the AncestryDna test and I actually found three third cousins that had taken the test there which was very cool.
I received my Y-dna from 23andMe though and that's were I discovered I was related to the individual from the 12 century or at least that part is mostly an educated guess. I don't know for sure that I'm related to him since his ydna has not been tested but I'm 90 percent sure.
We could compare raw data using either autosomal test though, it does not matter.

Mime would't be very interesting. Un Spain you receive two surames, the first one from your father and the second one from your mother. My first surname comes from an old Spanish city that still exists today. The first person with that surname was the bastard of a Spanish nobleman who bas born in that city (and therefore adopted the city name as his own to avoid carrying his father's name). This guy helped conquering Peru and discovered Chile.
My second surname comes from a Latin word meaning 'shore of a river', with a weird spelling due to the fact that it contains a letter b. (In Spanish both b's and v's are pronounced the same, so they were often interchanged in older times).
For all that I know, my grandparents, who are all still alive and range between 80 and 90 years old, were field workers when they were young. One of my great-grandfathers died when my great-grandmother was pregnant with my grandfather, so he grew up without a paternal figure. They all lived in the same village, where I'm writing this now. They all were practical, working people with little concern about politics, so the civil war didn't affect them too much. My mother's family has more leftish tendencies while my father's family is more prone to the left. I come from a Catholic tradition. That's basically all I know about my family, besides their names and some photos.

I've seen some younger Portuguese people who are extremely disdainful of their country and culture, she's definitely not one of those.
On the other hand, she's not into the culture as my friend from Lisbon who studies engineering. Most people in his department go on to work for telecom companies in Norway, and he desperately wants to stay in Portugal but is afraid of being unable to find a job.
I admit the American case is odd since it's easier for us to adopt new cultures as ours is very young and a patchwork of different ones, but I've known plenty of expats who have multi-national families who did just fine.

I really hope they get old and start crying when thinking about dying in a foreign country, missing their homeland. That bunch of fucks.
>I admit the American case is odd
The USA won't last long, your contry is an artifical one.
Saying that the USA is a real country is like saying that Brazil, Angola and Portugal are only one contry. When there's too much diversity, a "country" gets torn apart; just look at history and human behavior.
>but I've known plenty of expats who have multi-national families who did just fine
People without a definitive culture and identity are just like soulless people. They don't stand for greater values. And they often resort to other things that can fulfill their identity emptiness. Nevertheless, they cause the disappearing of cultures; saying that they are multi-national is quite laughable, cuz they truly aren't.
