The yellow and green are an homage to the imperial flag and Dom Pedro II. The blue circle is the starry sky at November 15, 1889 when we became a Republic. Each star represents a state. Also our motto "Order and Progress" was inspired by a positivist French thinker Auguste Comte motto of positivism "L'amour pour principe et l'ordre pour base; le progrès pour but" ("Love as a principle and order as the basis; progress as the goal")

Red and White are our National colours. Red is symbolic of England, White is symbolic of France (Bourbon France, that is)
And the Maple Leaf is an old Canadian symbol, obviously. Been used since Confederation (1867) to represent Canada abroad.
