>>
>>60985316

張藝謀 is one of the best directors
I can recommend his:
活著
大紅燈籠高高掛
英雄
十面埋伏

Apart from that, you should really watch:
臥虎藏龍
霸王別姬
The 三國 2010 tv series

And probably some more movies I might think of later.

I also really liked 刺客聶隱娘, but many people thought it was to slow and not eventful enough.
In my opinion, it is a piece of art that conveys a sublime, calm, and refined feeling, but I can understand if those words sound very pretentious to you. It's hard to describe it though.
The aesthetics are just really nice, every shot is a picture that you should let sink into your mind and memory.
Don't watch it if you lack patience and prefer action.

Hello lads, sorry to interrupt your conversation in Chinese, but I was wondering, could you give me some pointers on where to learn Chinese online, and how.

I'm thinking of learning Traditional Mandarin, because I may have chances of getting work in Taiwan, and I don't really like China Mainland. Nothing political or anything like that, it's just that it seems really polluted and corrupted, and at times, sorry for the term, uncivilized.
>>
>>60980920
Does anyone know any chinese imageboard? I heard about chinese policy against WorldWideWeb but still there's got to be at least one chan.
>>
>>60999218
They have that internet portal, Baidu or something. It's quite extensive and there's a lot to do there apparently.
>>
>>60999411
Baidu is the Chinese equivalent of Google

And to start learning Chinese, it's the same process as anything else that is difficult: just start with the first book on a large stack of resources

You can torrent the Chinese learning pack, it has pretty much everything you will need (except the human interaction)

Go Speaky is a community with many Taiwanese people who will help you. Not sure if they will want to talk to a Serb but it's worth a try.

rent is like 2-300€ per month, probably closer to 300 if you get your own apartment
food is really cheap if you eat asian stuff, you can get away with 1€ per meal. western food is more expensive
bus rides are 0.4-0.8€, subway is 0.5€ and up, and usually you can pay with your student ID card and get a 20% discount. at least in Taipei where I lived

That's nice to hear.

How are foreigners treated in Taiwan?
The ones that get citizenship eventually.

What are the most comfortable places to live?
I don't mean, comfortable as in convinent, that would be Taipei without question. I was meaning more in terms of family friendly cities, close to forests and such.

Sorry for so many questions, I might be a bother. I'm far from living there though, I don't want to go there without knowing the language, to me that's disrespectful.

>>61007863
Thanks for the songs, I really appreciate it.
>>
>>61008031
No problem, which ones do you like?

What I hear about Taiwan is that the people are really open and friendly compared to Japanese, yet mannered as well.
And I hear that scooters are the most popular means of transport. Which is pretty funny.
>>
>>61008031
Unfortunately I can't really answer those questions as I've only lived in Mainland China and have never been to Taiwan. I hope to study in Taiwan next summer, though.

>I'm far from living there though, I don't want to go there without knowing the language, to me that's disrespectful.
It's definitely good to know the basics before you go. Don't worry about achieving an advanced level or anything before going, though. If you arrive having a basic knowledge of Mandarin and you make sure to set aside some time daily for formal studying, your studying plus the immersion environment will allow you to quickly advance your level (key point here is actually doing that studying, as some foreigners go to China or Taiwan saying "oh yeah, I'll study in my free time" but procrastinate and never actually do study). Learning a few words of Taiwanese Hokkien might be nice as well, because if Taiwan is anything like Mainland China, a good amount of people won't expect you to know a word of Mandarin let alone the local dialect, so being able to say a few Hokkien phrases likely helps show people you're really interested in Taiwan. When I lived with a host family in Shanghai they really liked how I knew a few Shanghainese phrases. It's up to you, though. Of course Mandarin should be your top priority.

I really liked the second to last one, Jay Chou was decent. The 'typical sad guy' has an interesting music video. QSBS was also good. I'm in the midst of listening to the 1st album now, really good thus far.

That's good to hear.
How would they feel about a foreigner marrying a girl there? I don't have yellow fever, don't worry, just wondering, if I fall in love and marry someone there, hopefully she won't face discrimination for being with me.
>>
>>61008660
There was one video in which a really ugly guy gets shittalked by a random Taiwanese guy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYYVATuLwCA
I heard that the Taiwanese populace was really shocked about it and that they really hadn't imagine such a thing could happen there, so I guess it's pretty okay in general.
>>
>>61008626
Okay mate, thanks for the tips and making time to answer me.

What do you study?
>>
>>61008660
>How would they feel about a foreigner marrying a girl there?
From what I've heard, discrimination is very rare in Taiwan (at least with regards to white people, can't say for other races)

There was this incident >>61008757
but as Dutch-Anon says, Taiwan was shocked and heavily criticized the Taiwanese guy who was insulting the white guy, saying that he was ruining Taiwan's reputation and whatnot. I'm pretty sure the Taiwanese guy lost his job as a result (and lost a shitload of face).

>>61008765
Chinese and Computer Science.
>>
>>61008757
Yeah, I watched that video. The Taiwanese man looked like he was drunk or something and was trying to provoke him to attack him. Although, he might just be /r9k/-tier salty about women not noticing him. Maybe the girl was really pretty so he was angry about how such an ugly foreigner (that dude is really ugly) got a girl but he can't. But that's bullshit theorizing.

Thankfully, I'm really good looking, so I won't be called ugly there. Just kidding ofcourse. I'm not worried about myself, I can take shit. We Serbs are the furthest away from special snowflakes. I was just worried, if my hypothetical spouse would get abuse.

>>61008962
Well, the way it blew up and caused such a massive uproar somewhat proves how rare it is.

Computer Science is really nice, are you planning to get a job there after finishing your studies?

>>61008947
Will do mate. That's nice to know.
I feel like we take women for granted here, especially after traveling abroad. Our women are really good looking on average, while I was abroad, British Isles and Japan mainly, I was horrified on how ugly women were. Japanese girls not so much though, although those teeth are a no-go, but it's a fashion trend of theirs, who am I to judge.

I'm still not too sure what I want to do. I haven't started college yet, actually. I start soon. I graduated from high school last year and took a year off to live in China and Japan for a few months. For my Chinese major, though, I have to live in China for a year and intern at a company there, which should help me decide on a career. I'm thinking I'd either like to go into interpretation or China or Taiwan's tech industry.
>>
>>61009395
I heard that working in Mainland China is a bit of a hassle, people rarely do the job as agreed upon. They move deadlines, do subpar jobs, although, when you work for serious companies you surely won't encounter that.
>>
>learn Chinese
>can't even read Chinese comics
>>
>>60981167
you don't know korean senpai
>>
>>61009636
Yeah, I guess it definitely depends on the company. It'd be cool to live in Taiwan and eventually become a citizen, although I suppose I should actually go to Taiwan first to see if I like it. There's a former American who became a Taiwanese citizenship and ended up serving in the Taiwanese army. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TC_Lin

>>61009727
You might be able to find comics suited for your level. Also remember that the first few pages of a book will be the hardest to read, but it gets better as you go on.
>>
>>61009825
Endgame would be getting citizenship. Getting a Chinese would be a problem, because my name is really long. Thankfully, the syllables of my name are easy to replicate in Chinese, so I can just shorten my name.

I generally dislike tropical climates, but Taiwan really looks gorgeous with its nature. I'd really like to live there, although they have some legitemately spooky insects there.

>>61010082
I imagine that you should use flashcards like Anki to nail the hanzi in your brain. As for pronounciation and writing, there's a neat phone app called ChineseSkill, there's pronounciation and writing order for each character.
>>
>>61010233
Just note that a lot of people don't end up going through with getting a citizenship because if you're 35 or under, you're required to serve in the military. You also have you give up any other citizenships you have. For some people, that might not matter, but for others, they don't want to give up their US or EU citizenship.
>>
>>61010525
I don't particularly mind serving military, although I can imagine why it might pose a problem.

Giving up citizenship is not a problem.
>>
>>61010656
>Giving up citizenship is not a problem.
I thought Serbs were nationalist and removed kebab...
>>
>>61010982
I meant it like, I can get it back afterwards by Serbian law, so it's not a problem to give up citizenship.

Also, our economy is still shit after the 90's crisis, so, if I can't be useful here, I'll be useful somewhere else. Nationalism has nothing to do with it, and I'm really nationalistic.

Although, we have a chance to pull ourselves out of shit, but it all depends on this traitorous pro-EU government. For example, the Chinese president came to Serbia this Friday, and he stayed here for three days. We've signed contracts that will supposedly grant us the highest degree of economic cooperation one can have with China.

Russia also, is proposing that we join the Euro-Asian Union. I'd like us to join, not because of Russia, but because we will be useful, unlike in the EU, where we would be just an another failed state. We have one of the most fertile soils in Europe, we could feed Russia, which is pretty barren and gain huge profits.

Start with learning Pinyin practicing your pronunciation and tones. Once you get to vocab, Anki is helpful. Pleco is also the best phone dictionary app.

bros is it absolutely necessary to start learning with a tutor?

english is not my native language, and the way I learned it I would say having a tutor is a must in the beginning. but past all grammar (which really is easy to learn) you dont need a tutor.

same for chinese?
>>
>>61022362
While it's not necessary, if you're able to get a tutor, definitely do it. It'd be a major help with learning the tones and pronunciation (it's better to get a good grip on the tones early on).

What's the best way to learn Classical Chinese? I'm a native Chinese speaker but can't read very well. Not interested in modern Mandarin desu but am an aficionado of ancient languages (can read Latin with reasonable competency), and would like to add Ancient Chinese to my repertoire. Also, how feasible would it be to learn Classical Chinese with Middle Chinese rather than Mandarin pronunciations?

I feel like it'd be very hard unless you read linguistic papers.

You remind me of a teenager I met in rural China. He was kind of surprised to meet a foreigner who studies Chinese, perhaps because Mainland Chinese students go through so much trouble to learn English. Out of curiosity, why do these threads surprise you? After all, China is rather economically important nowadays and a lot of people like Chinese history as well, so to me at least it seems like it should be expected that a decent amount of people are interested in learning Chinese.

Modern Chinese culture is an utter nightmare. If you get run over by a car, no one will help you; everyone wants to swindle you; doctors won't lift a finger if your skull is caved in but you don't have the money at the moment. People shit and spit all over rural streets and start fights or quarrels over the stupidest shit. Any of the culture and art they had in the past has been wiped out by Mao, everyone there is a greedy idiot and any film, music, literature of note can only originate from outside mainland China. China is where the worst of western commercialization meets the worst of the eastern hive-mind. And if you're a white man speaking Chinese, chances are employers will send you there to work, where you will promptly regret your life choices.
>>
>>60981030

to be fair, >>61025145 describes the chunk of china that is loud, rude and uncultured - i do have nice mainland friends who are quiet and polite, but they're REALLY quiet and go undetected. you just need 1 million out of 10 million chinks to be shit to ruin it for everyone. the only reason i'd recommend a whitey learn pu tong hua, is because learning modern mandarin is a good bridging tool for whiteys to eventually learn traidtional chinese and go to taiwan. taiwan is nice.
