>>
Our navy used to be bigger than the British and French navy combined. And we beat the Britbongs in almost every war. When we took London we used a fleet twice the size the Spanish armada.
Plus we used to trade more in Asia than the rest of Europe combined with our merchant fleet.

During our golden age it honestly wasnt even a question.

I meant even if you take into account the size of their country they are the strongest.

Our navy was bigger at times in the number of ships, but we constructed our ships to be both merchant ships and war ships.
So we could quickly retrofit our ships in time of war.

Our navy was pretty much run by large corporations, who also owned our colonies. It would be like as if you'd wage war against Royal Dutch Shell and Unilever. And they'd use their billion dollar company resources to attack their competitors.
>>
>>60939299
Except that Google is worth 560 billion and our East Asia Company 7,4 trillion.

So it would be like fighting 15 Googles. Plus some other companies.

>>
>>60939516
I have to see that first. India and China are still very under developed and unorganized.

After a Brexit the European army might become a fact though. Although I highly doubt they'd build a bigger army than the American one. So the USA will probably top dog for at least another 50 years or so.
>>
>>60939474
Are you unaware Denmark was part of the Kalmar?

Vikings alone though. Each viking ship was independent so sinking or destroying ships meant nothing as each operated on its own. Surrender was an impossibility for the attackers or the attacked as the vikings were not thinking as a sovereign nation but as raiders on a gold rush.

It is an interesting topic for sure. Even the way a country fights war is different between nations and cultures. Russia for example has for such a long time had a scorched earth policy because it has always been part of war for Russia to destroy infrastructure and towns if in a retreat to prevent enemy from capturing or benefiting from them. Other than our civil war we have not fought on our own soil as Russia has had to do time and time again and this can be seen in that we do not approach war in the same manner. The differing strategies in Syria show this still to be true.

The best of seafaring nations has honestly spanned from everywhere between Portugal to Russia from the iron age to the industrial revolution so Finland certainly has some claim.

I meant that if you observe the all time achievements and grandness of these two nations' fleets, you simply can't rank them as high. Denmark's fleet from 17th century onward is something Sweden hasn't quite ever matched. And Danes were Vikings as well

Every political party we have wants to invest in our military. But the ministers still havent do so because they want to spend their money elsewhere. Despite that the ministers constantly say they will reinvest.

This also happened before WW2. Where oir parties wanted to build up a navy in Indonesia to prepare Indonesia for war (in Europe). But the minister of finance thought it was too expensive. And we didnt want to offend the Germans. Result? The Netherlands defeated and Indonesia lost.

The only reason why England succeeded the Atlantic ocean was because one of the Spanish treasure fleets into Hurricane season.

>>60938370
It was the only navy that was the top in the Pacific and first to exploit navel aviation. Even British got rekt in South China Sea, bro. Japs were literally the first people to make ships that prioritized better line of sight beyond the horizon just by making the citadels taller.

The U.S. made new battleships and cruisers just to purely counter the Imperial Navy's tactics, of ships from the interwar period. If we would have continued on the current path like the rest of the nations, we would have been rekt by mostly planes.

>>>>>>Dutch inventing marine soldiers
>Bruh
Literally ALL naval combat pre-cannon consisted of ramming and boarding. BOARDING. With marines. The ancient Greeks were fantastic at naval combat largely because they stuck a bunch of hoplites on each of their ships. Try fighting in confined quarters against a dude in heavy bronze plate with a bigass shield and a sword. The fact is, a big wooden structure is pretty tough to destroy without siege equipment or fire, and given how dangerous it is to have combustibles on a wooden ship, fire is pretty much a no go. Then there's the bit where siege equipment is huge, gets in the way of sails, and relies on high arcing projectiles, which makes hitting ships with anything other than a ballista near impossible. And disabling a ship with ballistae will take forever.

Then there's the fact that an all-wooden ship is literally impossible to sink without adding weights to it, so the best you can do without boarding it and capturing it is just making it immobile.

Thus, before the invention of cannons, the only safe (for the operator), effective. and widely-used naval tactics were ramming (safe because of metal-reinforced prows) and boarding. With marines.
