Obesity is a weird subject in America, one one hand every sensible person knows it's not OK to be obese but even suggesting people lose weight, even if mainly for their health, is a huge taboo. It's stupid, you can make fun of people's height, face, race, etc. with relatively no hitch if it's a joke, but the moment you make fun of someone's weight it's like you threatened to shoot them. But for nearly all people, your weight is something you can change and your features are something you can't.
